Chapter 2: The Illusion of a Happy Family
A happy family—does it truly exist, or is it just an illusion we project to the outside world? We smile, laugh, and act as though everything is perfect. But inside, do we really feel that way? Are you truly happy? Did your life go as planned? We all want to believe we know the people closest to us, that the sacrifices we make and the love we give aren’t in vain. But in a flash, everything can change, and the person you trusted most can become a stranger.
Sometimes, I wonder, do people have a conscience? Are they naturally kind, or is there something darker within them, hidden until the right moment? Today, I’ll share a truth: some people are born with darkness in their hearts. There’s no reason, no tragic past, no excuse. They simply choose to be bad.
I suppose I should introduce myself—I’m Kaptane, the youngest son in a family of five. At thirteen, I was still discovering the world, naïve and trusting. My sister, five years older than me, was someone I looked up to. My brother, Hamza, was three years my senior, but it was my sister I was closest to, or so I thought. She was supposed to care for me, to protect me, and I believed she loved me deeply.
Love can be shown in many ways, I know that. But I would soon learn that love could be twisted, even cruel, hidden behind gestures that left me questioning its very nature.
It was an ordinary day, the kind that lingers in your memory only because of what it becomes. I was alone at home, feeling restless, waiting for one of my friends from the gated community to call. The loneliness was gnawing at me, and I was desperate for company. Then the call came—my friend was waiting in the yard.
I bolted out the door, my heart racing with excitement. But as I rounded the corner and stepped into the yard, I froze. What I saw shocked me to my core. It was a scene that would forever change my view of the world, an image seared into my mind—a moment when everything I believed about family, trust, and love shattered in an instant.
