Haruna Shiobana's first memories were that of the brief warmth of her mother's first embrace before feeling the constant coldness for the next early years of her life.

The year was 1986, a full year has passed since she was born into this world. Little Haruno woke up to the darkness and the cold embrace of the night. The moon's silver light shone through the uncovered windows.

Haruno wanted to cry out for her mother, but she knew it would be useless. Despite her extremely young mind, the baby knew it would be futile to cry out to her mother. She was too scared to even cry.

With no one to comfort her, she truly felt loneliness was the scariest feeling to ever exist.

In the year 1989, Haruno was able to form full sentences. Her mother did not know. Not when Haruno barely talked to her. Haruno preferred speaking to the animals that occasionally wander within the perimeters of their home in Japan, or when she was out playing at the nearest playground.

She thought this would be how her life would continue for the next few years, but that changed when her mother informed her of something.

"I found a man from Italy and he said he would marry me." Her mother, Haruka Shiobana, told her on a random evening, "We've been talking for some time now. Took him a while to actually say and do it. We'll be moving to Italy as soon as our papers are processed."

Haruno did not say anything, the only indicator that she was paying attention was her observing her mother as she continued to organize their wardrobe.

It did not take a long time.

Soon, Haruno found herself in Italy. Time flies by fast and before she knew it, she was standing on the side as her mother was dressed in a beautiful wedding gown and getting her picture taken with her new husband outside a church in Italy.

"Come now, Haruno." Her mother's new husband greeted her warmly, "I'll be your step-father from now on. How about we celebrate this occasion by getting a family photo?"

Haruno stared silently at him, reading his smiling expression. There was this deep feeling inside her that was telling her that she should never trust this man.

But right now, she was outside of a church on her mother's wedding day. She did not want to ruin her mother's special day.

So with a silent nod, Haruno gave him a small smile before she made her way to stand beside her mother, completely ignoring the outstretched hand of her step-father. Said step-father seemed a bit put off by it, but he quickly fixed his composure.

Haruka placed a hand on Haruno's shoulder as she beamed on the camera. Haruno stood in the middle with her mother and step-father on each of her side.

That was the only day that Giorno looked happy with her step-father.

As soon as her parents' honeymoon phase was over, Haruno had little time to adjust to the new environment and with familiarizing herself with the new language. Due to her lack of ability to understand Italian and construct her own full sentences, she relied heavily on reading people. It was an amazing skill in her part considering her age.

Her step-father's opinion was vastly different.

Giorno, as she insisted on changing her own name to sound Italian, used her arms to protect herself from the beating of her step-father. It may not happen so often, but she figured that her step-father would most likely beat her up whenever her mother was out with her new Italian friends.

"Stupid fucking brat!" Giorno's father cursed, "Why do you always have that look on your face, huh?! You tryin' to read my mood!? Stop looking at me like that!"

Giorno closed her eyes as she bit her lip in pain. Not one tear even escaped her eyes.

It wasn't any better when she goes out to school. Some kids are particularly fixated on her and her exotic looks. If only it wasn't for the wrong reasons. They picked on her every chance they get.

Purposely tripping her, messing with her stuff, calling her names and even getting physical with her. They called her bug-eyed because of her big eyes, insulting her appearance any chance they get, including her small stature.

Giorno did not fight nor talk back. She did not know how. She knew it would be useless and would only be a hassle for her. Even if she tell the school about it, she would only receive scornful looks. She already figured that out.

It went on and on, to the point that Giorno barely talked to anyone, even when she was being addressed. This led to her thoughts being louder than her voice.

She questioned herself silently, did she deserve all of these? Why does this happen to her? Are their words really true? Was she just a scum on Earth, like they say?

Those thoughts circled around Giorno's mind as she trudged on her path back to her home. She barely heard the pained grunts from the bushes on her right as she passed by it.

Giorno looked over to figure out what or who made that sound. There was a man lying on the dirty ground as he held his hand over his possibly wounded stomach. There was blood on the grass and it did not take a long time for Giorno to figure out that this man was injured.

A series of hurried footsteps became louder as they get closer to her spot.

"Hey you, brat!" A gruff voice called out, "Have you seen an injured man anywhere? He should be this tall."

They did not look they were there to rescue the man.

Giorno stared up at the group of intimidating men impressively. Her eyes did not express her thoughts as she lifted her arm to point at the direction.

"He went that way."

Giorno's tiny, soft voice spoke as she pointed at the opposite direction, holding her stare.

"Dammit!! He couldn't have gotten far with that injury!"

Giorno lied.

She lied and saved that man.

The group immediately went to the direction she pointed. One of them stayed back for a bit as he looked at Giorno in scrutiny. Giorno met his gaze head on.

"Oi!!! Why are you still standing there?! Let's go!!"

The guy that was staring at Giorno looked away as he barked out a reply.

"I'm coming!!"

Giorno watched as their figured disappeared before she looked back at where the man was still laying.

She stared at the hunched figure of the man and all Giorno could think was how lonely this man must be. She thought they might be the same. Those people hate him and they seemed like they were hell-bent on capturing him.

She looked at the man and saw her poor lonely self in him, and she decided to help him in that small way.

The tall grass and flowers were enough to conceal his figure. Giorno thought he was smart on deciding to hide there.

With one last look on the injured man, Giorno walked away. She felt the inquiring gaze of the man as she headed home, thinking nothing more about the events that took place.
