Chapter 10 — He's back.
Azriel.
I'm panicking as I drive, my grip tight on the steering wheel. The moment I spotted that familiar figure, fear washed over me. I didn’t hesitate, using my vampire abilities to get myself back to my apartment as fast as possible. It’s the one across from where Lucy lives.
My fear isn’t for myself—it’s for her. There’s no doubt in my mind that she saw him…
And that means Lucy could get tangled up in my family’s mess.
I’m scared for her safety, for the woman I love. She’s already been through so much; she doesn’t deserve this burden too.
I’ll do whatever it takes to keep that bastard from touching her. I won’t let him hurt Lucy, not even if it costs me my life.
"Who the hell is that?" I shot a glare at my younger brother, Leonid Matthew Maxim, who was standing in the entryway, unimpressed. "Dad’s worried about you, you know? And now you just decide to show up here out of nowhere? And you brought a girl, too."
This was my greeting upon safely arriving at the mansion where my entire family lives. Our whole clan must be here. Well, it's safer this way, having everyone in one place. All my uncles, cousins, and even their friends are here.
It’s a relief I managed to make it here without being followed. I was on edge earlier when I noticed a black motorcycle trailing us, but I managed to shake it off my trail.
Maybe that bastard sent one of his lackeys.
Carefully, I laid Lucy on the sofa. She’d been unconscious the entire five-hour journey. My brows furrowed as I noticed her flushed cheeks. I placed my hand on her forehead, feeling the heat radiate from her skin. Damn, she has a fever.
"Who’s she, anyway?" my brother prodded, his tone annoyingly curious.
After making sure Lucy was comfortable, I finally answered him. "She’s Lucy. My girlfriend."
He gasped theatrically. "What?! The 17-year-old?!" He stared at me, wide-eyed, covering his mouth with his hand. He was being so dramatic.
I rolled my eyes at him. "Today’s her 18th birthday, so she’s not 17 anymore." I kissed Lucy’s forehead softly. "Get me some warm water and a towel," I instructed him.
"Mom! Dad!" He suddenly shouted towards the mansion’s staircase, and I tensed.
I wasn’t afraid of my parents knowing I was here, but I was worried they’d disturb Lucy. She needs rest with this fever.
"Shut up! If you wake Lucy, I swear you’ll regret it." I threw a pillow at him, my eyes flashing with anger. "Get the warm water and towel now!"
Grumbling, he stomped off to do what I asked. I let out a breath, then held Lucy’s hand gently.
Her temperature felt strange. As a werewolf, one of my abilities is sensing changes in body temperature. Outside, she was burning up, but… inside, her body felt cold, almost like a corpse.
Concerned, I studied her face. "What’s happening to you?" I muttered softly, my voice trembling.
"What the actual hell, Azriel Matteo Giovanni!"
