Promises, promises. Soon, they will mean nothing.
As she opened her eyes for the first time, a collective gasp echoed through the room.
"She's not a hybrid!" Bella cried, staring at her 'daughter's' wide, crimson orbs. "She's an immortal child! The Volturi will come for her—she has red eyes!"
Edward leaned over her shoulder, his gaze falling on the unsuspecting baby cradled in Bella's arms. The child seemed so innocent, but something about her felt... different. His breath caught. Bella was right—except the eyes that met his were not crimson. They were sapphire, deep and swirling, as if galaxies swam in them.
Emotions coursed through those wide, beautiful eyes: pain, betrayal, and... hate? Edward shook his head, trying to dismiss the thought. No. Impossible. She was just a baby. A hybrid child.
"What should we name her?" Rosalie spoke up, her voice tender and curious.
"How about... ShadoW Cullen?" Jasper suggested, stepping closer. "Shadow Stellar Cullen, for the dark aura that seems to radiate from her. And 'Stellar' for her galaxy-colored eyes."
"Shadow... it suits her," Rosalie murmured, nodding. She glanced at the child's eyes, her own filling with wonder. "Stellar, because of those beautiful colors. Like a swirling nebula."
"Wait," Edward said, frowning. "Galaxy eyes? Her eyes are blue?"
"No, her eyes are red!" Bella snapped, her voice rising.
"They're green," Esme added softly, confusion creasing her brow.
"No, they're gold!" Emmett argued. The room erupted in disagreement, voices clashing as everyone perceived something different, until silence finally fell, all eyes turning to Bella and Edward for a solution.
Bella's jaw tightened, her expression hardening. "I say we leave her somewhere. We still have Renesmee. Who needs this... this creepy child?"
Rosalie stepped forward, fury blazing in her eyes. "Bella, how can you speak like that about your own daughter?" she seethed. "At this rate, even the Volturi would be better parents than you."
Murmurs of agreement swept through the Cullens, all except Edward.
"Rosalie..." Edward began, warning in his tone.
"I. Don't. Care!" Rosalie interrupted, her voice shaking with rage. "She wants to abandon her own child!"
"Fine," Bella hissed, her voice cold as she wrapped her arms around Renesmee. "Raise that thing yourselves. But keep her away from my Renesmee."
Shadow whimpered, clinging to Rosalie, who gathered the child into her arms. Rosalie held her close, shielding her from Bella's hateful gaze.
The child nestled into Rosalie's chest, her small form trembling, as if sensing the tension surrounding her. Rosalie looked down, her resolve hardening.
Everyone in the Cullen family loves her. Just not Bella.
They need to learn to accept her. Or else...
