Coraline Jones | 11 | Has a love for exploration and a big imagination. Loves the circus and has the personality of a theatre fanatic. Her only wish? a perfect family. A child to the core with family complications, she seeks things in the wrong places and comfort in non human things. She is all about dreaming and fearing like any other kid's mind, only it is enhanced when not given the things necessary in childhood.
Cat | unnamed | Is all about the mystery and a mentor of Coraline's though he doesn't do much talking throughout. He likes green and its' hidden chaos because nothing is what it seems. Calming Fear lurks around him causing Coraline to get over her own fear, in the end, of being harmed and not being a protected child.Coraline Doll | Everywhere at once. She will lurk and listen to Coraline's problems and worries. Coraline will communicate to her as if she were her consciousness and the doll will help her create her own reality where her parents give her care and supervision as it is ultimately her wish as a kid. The buttons serving for being blinded by daydreaming, a common mechanism in Children who lack parental attention.
Coraline's Parents | Two completely opposite adults, one too child-like and the other too work oriented, leaving no space for Coraline to be a kid. Coraline resents them and thinks they are boring leading her to danger she overcomes by herself. Her parents not focusing on her child needs, makes this story unfold.
Coraline's Other parents | Fun and capturing. They represent unrealistic expectations of a family dynamic because Coraline does not feel seen at home. The red surrounding them means temptation of the wish for a perfect family, before things take a turn and Coraline lets her little girl dreams go and matures at the end of the film.
The Secret door | Tunnel | Playing an important role as transportation to the other side. The first time Coraline goes through it, she carries an impressionable demeanor and a hopeful face. This represents her kid-like dreams and hopes. The second time she loses her fear to go through it and is looking for her parents. An act of bravery that means she has realized that though, imperfect, her family is all she needs. Coraline enters the tunnel with the mind of a neglected little girl and leaves it with the overcoming of her Child Character's dreams and fears and the saying, "Be careful what you wish for."
