The windows show an opaque black, broken only by the city lights and the reflections of the hospital interior. It's Tuesday evening, roughly twenty-four hours later. Her bodyguard takes up her position in the corner by the door, and Morgan strides into Pepper's room.
"Hey Mom. Sorry I'm late. How are you?" She kisses Pepper on the cheek.
"Ummogay," Pepper slurs out, still recovering from the stroke but half-smiling. She raises her shaky left arm, barely able to point at the door.
Morgan notices. "Hey! You can move your arm now! Good."
"Mburtonshear."
"What?" Turning with a frown, Morgan sees Clint Barton leaning casually against the room's doorframe, arms folded. She gasps.
"Hey."
Morgan jumps up, grinning, and rushes to hug him. "Barton! Hi!" she exclaims into his shoulder. "It's so nice to see you!"
They embrace for a few moments, and Barton gives her a gentle smile. "Same. Hi Pepper." He moves to Pepper's bedside.
"Hey," Pepper says, and puts her hand on his.
"I'm sorry about canceling Thanksgiving," Morgan mumbles.
Barton glances at her. "It's alright. Thought I'd visit you now anyway."
Morgan's phone dings. She checks it, and raises her eyebrows. "Really? They're ready now?" She looks at the two of them. "I'm sorry, I have to go. Press release."
Barton shrugs good-naturedly. "We can catch up later. Go be CEO."
Morgan leaves the room, but as she crosses the threshold, he calls after her.
"And - Morgan?"
She glances at her bodyguard, and turns around in the doorway. "Yeah?"
Barton's smile is wider. "Your dad would be proud of you."
