"Your first assignment for this semester is to write an essay on any one philosophical concept. To avoid any repetition, give your chosen topics to Ms. Josephine Harper, and Ms. Harper, please hand me the list by the end of the day," our philosophy professor commands before exiting the class.
Josephine comes and stands in front of the class and asks for our topics. I choose embodied cognition for my essay. It is one of the topics that really grabbed my attention.
I exit the lecture room and make my way for my Asian literature lecture. Just before I am about to enter the class, I remember that Elias, and probably Ria as well, are going to be here too.
Should I tell him what happened in the washroom today, or should I keep my mouth shut? What if Ria already told him what happened? I have a feeling she didn't.
I sigh and take my seat. I take out my mobile and text my friends about what happened and ask for their opinions on what I should do next. Now that the four of us are busy with our own individual lives, quick replies have become infrequent. Hopefully, I will get the replies by the end of the day.
Elias and Ria enter the class, hand in hand. Elias waves at me, and Ria gives me an evil stare. They take the seat behind me.
"Ria, she is the one I told you about yesterday," Elias says to her. I can hear the smile in his voice.
She definitely didn't tell him about today.
Elias taps on my shoulder, and I turn around to face them with a tight-lipped smile.
Ria gives me a sweet smile, which is obviously fake.
"Alaia, this is Ria, my girlfriend. I talked to her, just as you advised, and it worked. She even agreed on sitting with me in the front," he beams with a child-like joy.
"That's great. I am happy I could help," I smile back at him. I would be genuinely happy if Ria wasn't as insecure about him as I know now.
"Thank you, Alaia," Ria says to me as she tightens her hold around his upper arm while keeping her eyes on me. Is the blood still circulating in his arm with that tight grip around it?
I fight the urge to roll my eyes. Professor Lincoln enters the room just in time to save me from giving any response. I turn back to the front and focus on the lecture.
A few minutes into the lecture, I hear soft murmur from behind. I choose to ignore it until I hear her say.
"Baby, how are you not sore right now. Was I not fast enough last night?"
My eyes widen. What the hell? Is she really talking about sex during a lecture?
"Ria! We are in class right now," he whispers.
I try to force my attention back to my copy of Pachinko, but the things she says make it hard for me to concentrate.
"Ms. Bennet, can you please read the first line of the book?" Professor Lincoln asks me.
I look up and try to un-hear the conversation happening behind me.
"Uh, yes. History has failed us, but no matter."
"Why do you think the author chose to start the book this way?"
I go through my notes and try to answer the question. After a few minutes of discussion, the professor ends the lecture. As soon as she leaves the room, Ria drags Elias out of the room, too, as if trying to get him away from me as fast as possible. I give in the urge to roll my eyes.
After one more lecture, I leave for home. I am again greeted by the sight of my mom on our couch playing with Cyra.
"You're back. How was your day, sweetie?"
