Light vs. Dark

I was in the 6th grade...

And there was this book.

This book was about colorism.

And my teacher, who was white, was completely oblivious that it was a thing.

"So does that really go on." She asks my friend and I.

Yes.

It shocked me to hear that...

that amongst the racism received from outside ourselves...

Some people didn't know nor care that we were tearing each other down.

What a shame that is.

You'd think after all that we've learned, felt, and experienced based on the color of our skin we'd be more open to self-improvement as a whole group.

But instead we've got a color chart with various shades of brown, ranking ourselves from most to least acceptable.

Again none of this is beneficial.

How would you feel if someone ridiculed you in such a way you felt like your were worth nothing?

Surprise!

Those who really believe in light skinned vs dark skinned issues and think they actually matter are ignorant.

Your very own ancestors, as close as a great grandmother, have been through it. But it wasn't self inflicted.

They were separated by the mere difference between the shade of their skin and the color of a brown paper bag.

That bag determined whether they would live indoors or outdoors, either way they were still slaves.

So why are we doing this to ourselves.

So why do we still continue to use the white mans policy that lighter is better and argue it?

WE ARE ALL BLACK!

To the white man there is no difference.

We need to stop fighting these senseless battles and worry about the ones bigger than us.
There's men out there killing people's sons and daughters.
There's men out there that believe that we should still be enslaved.

Too bad we're already enslaving ourselves...
