I don't know what I expected from this.
From who I am to who he is. The odds of stumbling upon someone so perfectly fitting, only to discover they possess a character flaw that clouds everything. But maybe it's not about them at all.
Maybe it's the way I perceive the world around me. It's so starkly different from those I encounter. What perspective should I choose to write from? Should I narrate real life and weave it into a fantastical tale? Or should I rewrite it to match my desires? Either way, the truth seems grim. So, let's dive into the narrative I crave. Isn't that what writing is about? Drawing inspiration from experience, adding my unique touch according to the genre? Or am I missing something crucial here?
Can I craft it however I wish? It's merely an expression of my thoughts.
Izuku fidgeted with his hands as his therapist, Toshinori Yagi, read through his recent journal entry. An anxious buzz coursed through his skin; he felt the familiar tension in his leg as it bounced with nervous energy, seeking any distraction from this heavy moment.
After a prolonged silence, his therapist looked up, his gaze steady.
"So, who exactly are we talking about at the start, Young Midoriya?"
Izuku bit his cheek nervously before responding. "O-oh...just some past love interests I've had."
"Alright...and I assume these encounters have been displeasing or disappointing in some way?"
"Yeah, you could say that."
"Is there a common theme in these disappointments?"
"Definitely."
"Can you articulate what that theme is?"
He hesitated, gathering his thoughts. "I guess it usually boils down to our core values...our perspectives, or how they treat me."
"What values are we discussing here?"
"Um, core values. Like morals and ethics."
Toshinori leaned slightly forward, intrigued. "What are some of your personal morals and ethics, Young Midoriya?"
Why does he keep probing this topic?
"Honesty, compassion, and courage."
"Alright, and can you see how those values might clash with someone who doesn't embody them?"
"Yes, definitely. Most of the time, anyone lacking those beliefs tends to be arrogant or make poor judgments."
"Why do you think that is?"
"Because, for one, honesty is essential—it's the foundation of trust. Without it, communication falls apart. Two, compassion fosters connections with others and nurtures empathy. And finally, courage allows you to stand up for yourself and others, pushing through challenges that may seem insurmountable to some."
"And anyone who doesn't share those qualities is labeled 'arrogant' in your view?"
"Yes."
There was a pause, thick with unspoken thoughts.
Just then, the timer on Yagi's phone rang, shattering the silence and signaling the end of the session.
Izuku let out a long sigh of relief.
"It was nice talking to you, Young Midoriya... We'll delve deeper next time. Until then, take care of yourself, and stay safe."
He nodded stiffly, his heart racing as he reached for his notebook and quickly exited the office, eager to escape. The frustration roiled within him, a storm of irritation and pent-up energy.
At least I won't have to think about this until next week, he thought bitterly.
Or so he hoped...
