The only sound in the restaurant was the bickering of two customers, initially sounding like two drunkards fighting, but upon closer inspection, appeared more like a couple in the midst of a heated argument. Who am I to judge? We live in a very open society nowadays. It was then that I received a call.

"Harper, we have a new case for you."

"I told you I'm done with this type of business, I've retired."

"The pay is good."

Pause.

"How much?"

"Two hundred thousand."

Another pause.

"...what's the case about?"

"There's a relatively popular homicide case that needs to be solved, and we need you to put the culprit behind bars."

"Can't you find someone else to do it?"

"Well, you know what they say, in order to catch a criminal, you need to think like one, and who would be more capable in that than you?"

"What did I say about bringing up my past?" I sighed. I was beginning to get irritated.

"I know, I know, but we really need your expertise. We will greatly appreciate it if you could lend your assistance."

"Fine," I reluctantly agreed. "Who am I going to be working with?"

"You'll be partnered with two other detectives. I'll send you more information about them shortly."

Damn, what did I just get myself into? I'm too tired for this shit but hell the pay was good. Before I knew it I heard a loud bang from the table infront me, it was the couple I observed a few minutes ago.

"You have to buck up, Cas!"

"I will buck up when I want to."

It looks like a fight is about to break out from the couple. I'm so done, can't they keep quiet? I got up from my chair and left the restaurant before another ring could be heard from my phone.

"Harper, are you ready to meet your teammates?"

"No."

"Trust me, you'll be pleasantly surprised when you meet them."

"Oh, I'm sure I will." I said, my tone dripping with sarcasm. "Anything else I need to know before I meet them?"

"Just be ready for anything. They're both very experienced detectives and they'll likely rely on you for guidance given your reputation."

"My reputation, huh?" I muttered, feeling a pang of annoyance. "I suppose I can't shake it off, eh?"

"Just take it as a compliment," the voice on the other end of the phone replied. "Your skills are unparalleled, after all."

This is utterly unbelievable but here i am, still accepting the job.

"Fine, fine. Where's the location?"

"The mcdonald's infront of the park."

My fucking luck, I just left there.

"They should recognise you once you enter. Good luck."

I re-entered the restaurant again to see the same couple staring at me. Seriously? Them of all people, yes I get that they were good looking but why do I have to be the bloody third wheel?
