*The Second Grade (2002)*
Isra holds onto the covers over her head, dreading for her mother to come knocking saying that it's time to get ready for school. She looks over at the clock, 6:59 am, just one more minute to spare. Just when the clock hits 7:00 am her mother "Tammy" comes knocking.
"Isra..." she says banging on the door "WAKE UP"
Isra pulls the covers off of her body heading to her closet to get her school uniform. A white polo, navy blue pants, and black ballet flats with straps. She lays them on her bed and walks into the bathroom across the hall from her bedroom, to start her morning routine.
After getting ready, she starts walking to school with her two older sisters. They usually walk her halfway, right before they turn around and head towards their Middle School, just a few blocks away. She says goodbye to them before making her way to school along with the other kids in the windy Chicago weather. It's the fall, which means it's only getting colder by the day.
She walks into the school, Evergreen Elementary. It wasn't the biggest school, but she loved it just the way it was. She missed breakfast as usual, which left her to walk towards her classroom instead. Isra walks in greeting her teacher Ms. Givens, then hangs her coat and backpack on her coat rack, grabs her supplies, and heads to her seat.
Just as she prepares herself for class, other students make their way to their seats as well. Laughing and snickering for some reason. She looks around noticing everyone is laughing and pointing at her. What was so funny?
"Isra has a bald spot, haha!" says a classmate of hers, pointing right at her.
Tears fall from her eyes as she puts her head down crying. The teacher quiets down the class, starting the lesson.
After asking for a hall pass, she makes her way to the bathroom. Isra looks in the mirror at her hair. She knew why she has bald spots, she also knew they would go away soon, but she just hoped they'd go away faster. She had gotten ringworm when playing at a daycare center with her best friend. They were playing hair salon brushing each others hair, unaware that her best friend had it, she brushed her hair as well. Spreading it to herself.
Now she tried covering them with her hair berets and headed back to class.
*Fast forward to the present day (the seventh grade 2011)*
Isra looked at her reflection in the mirror, turning sideways and back again. She was disgusted, and sad. She was overweight, something the kids at school never let her forget. Not only was she overweight, she was also a nerd. Her self-esteem was at its lowest, and the everyday comments she got only made it worse. She applied some lip gloss before meeting her best friend, who was outside waiting for her, and walked to school. She was going to Redden Middle School, which was just a few blocks away. She wore a navy blue skort, with a white polo, and black ballet flats.
As they entered achool, everyone greeted her best friend "Ebony" ignoring Isra's existence. She kept her head down while walking to her locker. Her and Ebony had different teachers, so they went their separate ways parting. Isra sat down in her desk in the front of the class staring down at her books. As you can notice, Ebony was her only friend other than her other best friend that lived in another town. She pulled out 'Breaking Dawn' and began reading.
The day dragged on and soon she was in reading class. It was her favorite subject, she loved to read. The teacher asked for any volunteers that would want to read. Isra was the only one leaving the teacher with no choice but to choose her.
"David was never a good guy. In fact, he was always the bad guy. He.." She started to hear laughing as she read more.
"I don't want to read anymore Ms. Ross" she said with her head down.
"Okay, anymore volunteers?" Ms. Ross asked looking around. Suddenly everyone's hands were raised. "Okay, Mya go ahead"
"Finally, now we don't have to hear that deep voice again." Mya said while laughing with everyone else.
Isra looked back at Mya before turning back around and putting her head down. Today was going to be a bad day, just like the others, maybe even worse.
Later that day, Isra was looking in her bathroom mirror at herself once again. She picked and pulled at her cheeks, stomach, and thighs. Silently crying so her mom won't hear her, she quickly wiped her tears, changing her clothes, and starting work.
Tammy mother owned a home daycare, so she was able to not only be able to get paid, but also spend more time with her children. Isra walked into the room late starting to give snack to the kids quickly. Tammy looked at Isra before heading out the door to pick up some after-schoolers from school.
Isra's older sister 'Amber' came out of the room they shared yawning.
"Girl you know you are too big to be wearing those shorts without leggings." Amber laughed walking into the kitchen to make herself some cereal.
"When are you going to start dressing better, cus you forvever flooding in those school pants" She said shaking her head
"When you stop being a hoe" she said under her breath hoping no one heard her. The last thing she needed was to be in trouble.
Amber was curvy, with big thighs, and a small waist and stomach. She was the girl every guy wanted. Unlike Isra, Amber was confident and popular. Guys loved her, but girls hated her, she was the girl every girl wanted to be. She could also sing and dance, they were her passion.
She grabbed her bowl of cereal going back to their room, closing the door. Not only was Amber beautiful and popular, but the oldest sister, Mykah was too. She was skinny, dark-skinned, and shorter than both Isra and Amber. Guys loved her as well, she could also dance but she couldn't sing.
Isra was jealous. She wished she was as beautiful and talented as they were. Yes, she could play a few instruments, but that never seemed to amount to what they could do. Tammy was also popular when she as younger too. Isra felt like she was a letdown to her mother, like she couldn't live up to the standards her mother had set for her. She'd never tell her that though. She just wished she was.......different.
