PROLOGUE

The room was dim and I was having trouble making out anything. I hesitantly walked in, just realizing that I was standing in the doorway. Narrowing my eyes, I took a few steps into the darkness. Before I could go any further, the lights snapped on. I flinched and shielded my eyes with my hand. Slowly opening my eyes, I looked around. My heart thundered in my chest as I took in all the mirrors covering the walls. Glimpses of my daunting past arose in my mind, breaking the little lock I had put on them. I gulped down the bile in my throat, and warily stepped back a couple of steps before turning around and sprinting. I ran back the way I had come in but there was no door there, just another mirror, revealing a distorted reflection of me.

Vigilantly, I turned around to face all the mirrors and took a deep breath to calm myself. My breathing began to steady but my heart refused to listen to me.

My head snapped up as I heard something. A door was opening on the other side of the room. I would have never guessed it was a door since it looked like any other mirror. A man stepped in from the other side of the door. My heart dropped when I saw his face. He was wearing his casually cruel smile that sent chills down my spine. He stopped about 5 feet away from me and grinned.

“Mikayla.” He greeted with a nod.

I dared not ignore him and nodded back.

“Dad.” My voice broke a little but I tried to hide it by pretending to clear my throat. Judging by his smirk, however, it was apparent that the attempt was a fail.

“I see you’re still scared of me.” His voice was dripping with glee.

I swallowed and shook my head, trying not to meet his eyes.

“I am not-“

He stepped closer to me, making me flinch and stop talking instantly.

“You lie,” he stated with a wicked glint in his eyes. “You know I don’t like lying...”

I swallowed and looked up at him. His black bottomless eyes looked down at me. I backed away sub-consciously. He towered over me. I stepped back again and found myself against a wall – well, a mirror. Everything was blurring and in slow motion. His hand was reaching out... Clammy fingers wrapped around my frail wrist... I was being pulled...

I screamed.
