Author's pov:
Tuck!
Tuck!
Tuck!
The sound echoed through the room, growing louder with each second.
It was the sound of arrows hitting a board, as someone was steadily darting them, aiming straight for the middle.
Tuck!
Another arrow flew, hitting the bullseye with perfect precision.
All the arrows were clustered in the center of the board, a clear sign that the person throwing them was highly skilled.
The room was dimly lit, with only the soft glow from a single lamp highlighting the target.
The person stood a few steps back, calm and focused, breathing evenly as if this was routine.
They stepped forward to pull out the arrows, their movements steady and practiced.
It wasn't just about hitting the bullseye; it was a way to clear the mind, to drown out the noise of the world outside.
And right now, this person had a lot on their mind.
The person was Darkling, and playing the dart game had become part of Darkling's everyday routine.
It helped with focus, a way to clear the mind and stay sharp.
After putting the arrows down on the table, Darkling grabbed an apple from the nearby fruit basket, taking a bite before walking over to the sofa in the corner of the room.
As Darkling sat down, their eyes naturally drifted to the laptop screen which was kept on another table.
A faint progress bar showed some data downloading, lines of numbers and coded information flashing by.
The laptop's hum filled the room as the process continued, each new line adding to something that Darkling was carefully monitoring.
Taking a bite of the apple, Darkling continued to watch the screen intently, but was interrupted by the sudden ringing of the phone.
Darkling's eyes shifted to the phone lying beside the laptop.
Ace's name flashed on the screen.
Darkling reached out, answering the call with a calm, measured tone.
"What is it?" Darkling asked, eyes still flickering between the phone and the laptop, keeping track of the progress on the screen.
"Just checking in," Ace replied.
"How's everything going on your end? Did you get any information about Dark Shadow?" He asked.
"Not yet. Still working on it," Darkling said, taking another bite of the apple.
The sweet and crisp taste filled Darkling's mouth, a small comfort amidst the tension.
"Make sure to keep me posted. This is crucial," Ace said, a hint of urgency in their voice.
"I know, Ace. But you also know that I don't like when someone keeps interrupting me again and again."
"I've already told you that if I get any crucial information, I will share it with you. But you won't stop calling," Darkling replied, a slight edge in their tone.
Ace paused for a moment.
"I just want to make sure you're okay and not getting sidetracked," he replied.
