Asa had always been a perfectionist. Growing up in Japan, she spent hours after school watching K-pop videos, analyzing performances, and practicing her rapping and dance routines in her bedroom. But now, standing in the stark, fluorescent-lit practice room of Baby Monster, everything felt more real—and more daunting—than ever.
She was 16 years old, older than most of the other trainees, and had already faced an obstacle many others wouldn't: coming to Korea on her own. Leaving behind her family and friends, Asa felt the isolation keenly in these early months. She wasn't fluent in Korean and had to adapt to the fast-paced K-pop industry, where new faces were always coming and going, and competition was fierce.
The other trainees, most of them younger and more naive, buzzed with excitement about their shared dream, but Asa felt the weight of reality. She wasn't just here to perform; she was here to prove herself. To be noticed. To be wanted.
Training was grueling—vocal lessons with a demanding coach who pushed her limits, choreography that often felt like a blur of movements, and rap sessions where she had to work hard to perfect her flow and timing. Asa often found herself practicing late into the night, far later than most of the others, fearing she wasn't good enough. But with each passing day, she knew that she was improving, slowly but surely.
When the other trainees began to arrive, one in particular caught Asa's attention—Chiquita. The 14-year-old Thai trainee seemed like a ball of light, with an infectious laugh and a natural rhythm that made her stand out even in a room full of talented dancers and singers.
Chiquita's presence reminded Asa of her younger self, someone with big dreams but not yet enough experience to understand how much sacrifice it would take to get there. The two exchanged shy smiles on the first day they met, but Asa quickly saw that Chiquita was going to be a rising star in her own right.
