The sound of high heels clicking against marble floors echoed through the long hallway, as Sofia Kane strode confidently toward her office. People moved aside as she passed, acknowledging her with respectful nods. At thirty, Sofia had built a life others envied. She was the CEO of her own consultancy firm, known for her sharp mind and no-nonsense attitude. But beneath the surface, she carried a weight that few could see. A past she had long buried.
She pushed open the door to her office, the spacious room greeting her with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bustling city below. Sofia dropped her briefcase on the polished oak desk and glanced at the picture frame sitting in the corner. It was an old photo of her and her mother, smiling. That was before everything changed. Before life hardened her into the woman she was now.
Her assistant, Daniel, appeared in the doorway. "The clients are waiting in the conference room, Ms. Kane," he said, his tone brisk, professional. Just the way she liked it.
"Good," Sofia replied, adjusting the sleeves of her tailored suit. "Let’s not keep them waiting."
As she made her way to the meeting, her phone buzzed. A quick glance showed a message from an unknown number: “We know what you did. This isn’t over.”
Sofia’s fingers tightened around her phone. She deleted the message, her face expressionless. She wouldn’t let anyone see how much it rattled her. After all, she had faced worse.
