Everything felt wrong - too still, too dark, almost as if it waited for them to make a mistake. Trees stood on either side of the road like silent sentinels. Their endless shadows obscured the little bit of light from the full moon. The engine's growl felt too loud and desperate. It could never drown out the creeping dread pooling in her stomach, every fiber in her being screamed danger.

They're close.

She felt the weight of something hunting them, closing in around them. Two small blips of light appeared in the rearview mirror like a warning. Her father's grip on the steering wheel tightened, the whites of his knuckles apparent even in the dark. Something inside her knew they wouldn't make it out.

Not this time.

She turned around in time to see the dark SUV approach at warp speed. Headlights burned into her eyes from a distance in its endless pursuit.

Her mother's voice cuts through the tension. "Stay down. Don't move unless I say. The last thing we need is for them to learn about you."

She nods, even though her mother doesn't see. Panic crawled its way up her throat. The SUV grew louder as it gained on them, eventually growing so loud it deafened everyone in the vehicle. Her father turned in his seat to get a better look at who chased them, even though they all realized deep down who it was.

Before she can register anything, another SUV crashes into view, cutting them off.

"Get down!" someone screamed.

The car jerked off the road, spinning the world on its axis. Everything shattered in a deafening roar: metal, glass, and darkness.

Then - nothing.

Her father's last command cut her off from registering any pain.

"Run! Get out of here!"

Then the world went black.

Then the world went black
