"Do you want cookies?"
"Do you want chips?"
We hear rustling and feel the weight of a heavy object placed in the corner of out home.
"No, I want this."
The pressure is released and all we can hear now is the quick thuds of footsteps, matched with a steadier thud; walking away.
It's dark, we sit silently as we all await our fate. My friends, family are all cramped up in a small tight space.
We know why we are here, we have a destiny to fulfill, and something else to fill...
We have been specifically planted and grown, then shaped to become what we are now. We are special, we are unique, but so are the others.
Rows and rows, and isles of ones just like us. Competing to be picked, to be taken and be the chosen packet.
Although our packet is dark, our eyes have adjusted to the dim lighting and I can make out the silhouettes of my friends; who are chatting below me. It is contaminated by the strong smell of vinegar, each breath I take my lungs fill up with this acidic smell, choking me. It had been so long since we have smelt the fresh air, the smell of soil and freshly cut grass. It has been so long since we have felt the wind blow across our check. Ever since we were placed in these air-tight bags, our lives have dampened, and soured.
But we do not complain.
We have been instructed and told, and are no stranger to the harsh reality of the real world – where we could not be chosen, and left here to sit on these cramped, metal shelf's for the rest of our life (until we expire).
We sit quietly, patiently and we wait. Eager but discouraged.
Suddenly we are picked up, we are swung from side to side. With each swing we are thrown into a corner, getting crushed with each other. I hear yelps of pain as some get their arms torn apart. I reach my hand out, trying to grab my sister as the bag begins to dip in the other direction. I grasp hold of her just in time and hold her tightly in my arms, shielding her from the impact of the fall. The roller-coaster ride stops and we are placed on a cool smooth surface. Then thrust into a tight plastic bag, along with various other items.
A loud beep pierces my ear, followed by a low masculine voice.
"That's $21.80"
We are scared, and excited. The others are, but I am simply tired.
~~~
"Bluebird! Wake up, he's opening it!"
I jolt up, staring at the dark abyss above. Slowly, streams of light flow in. The light is abruptly blocked by a large object. As the object rears in I realized that it's a hand, a large, hairy hand. I watch as it grabs several of my friends, I watch as they glide above; enthusiastically waving. I wave back with a large grin on my face. They disappear from my sight and suddenly I hear screams followed by a loud crunch.
My entire body freezes and my legs turn stiff yet feel like they could crumble any minute. My eyes stare at the packet opening, fixated at the point where I last saw my friends.
They never said anything about this.
The hand comes in a reached for more and this time we run, in circles. Screaming, yelling, crying.
It grabs several of my friends at a time, taking away my family and loved ones. Their wails continue until a deafening crunch silents the whole room, but only for a second. The cries escalate again as the claws come back.
They never told us anything about being slaughtered.
The smell of vinegar suddenly becomes too overwhelming, it crepts into my nostrils and clenches my lungs in the same manner the hands are clenching my sister right now.
I hear her scream my name and I dash towards her.
"Not my sister you monster!" I howl.
The hand lifts my sister into a dark caven filled with rows of stained teeth, the caven closes and I replace the crunch with a sharp piercing scream.
The walls of the packet seem to close in on me, and I realise that I am the last one left. My entire body erupts into a seizure as I shake uncontrollably, the air seems to have been taken away with the else of my friends and famly, leaving me trembling and gasping for air. Each breath seems to flare up my lungs, and it feels like a thousand knifes stabbing my chest. Stabbing and stabbing as the air deflates out of me, and the tears leak out.
I watch as the hand comes back once more, rumaging around. Looking for me.
It takes hold of me, lifting me out of my home. I face the monster that has slaughtered my loved ones and I stare into the dark caven.
"Eww it's soggy, I don't want to eat it!" It growled, tossing me back into the packet.
No! I thought as I fell.
Take me.
please
