It was true when Naruto woke up in this time she remembered everything. It was torture, watching her parents die, and it was painful to once again be kicked out of the orphanage as soon as she could walk, speak, and somewhat take care of herself. However, with this pain came opportunities; an opportunity to do it all over. This time Naruto would be OK. She would make sure of it.
Well...
That was what she thought at least, until the ghosts began to appear. Naruto hated ghosts. They were scary and they had no sense for personal space. It started off small with a little old woman on the street corner, more see-through than normal. Then It slightly picked up a little bit when two redheaded old men followed her around Konoha for an entire week mumbling about her being such a strange blonde Uzumaki child. Men, that- mind you, no one else could see.
Finally, it really hit the fan one day in the old hokage's office while she was there in order to petition the old man for an apartment even earlier than she'd gotten one in her first life. In that office were three faces she didn't think she should see again in this life. The faces belonged to none other than Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, and her own father.
All three of which were also ghosts.
Now, if Naruto had any common sense she would've kept quiet, but let's be honest this was Naruto. She wasn't one to keep quiet even as an adult, and she was still just as incredibly impulsive as she was in her first go around.
"What are you doing here?" She blurted out to her chagrin. The Hokage in his confusion thought she was talking to him.
" Well Naruto," he leveled her with a look ,"I'm the Hokage and I work here." he said it so matter-of-factly that Naruto couldn't help the blush that painted her cheeks.
She caught on quick, rubbing the back of her neck in embarrassment. "O-oh I know! I just meant-" she looked around the office, searching for a believable excuse. Before quickly noticing the dark bags under his eyes, and the greenish hue of his skin. " You look sick, so I was just wondering why you were here when you could be at home Gramps!"
It was settled Naruto was a lying genius!!!
He was taken aback for a moment before he finally nodded in understanding, and put down his pen, giving the little girl his full attention. " Well, Naruto-chan, I am sick. However, since I'm the leader of this village, I don't just have sick days like everyone else. Anything short of death means that I still have to be in this office. I can't trust others to do what is best for the sake of the village. It's all in my hands you see?" He held out his hand in a 'what can you do' gesture.
Naruto taught he was incredibly stupid, but she didn't dare say anything. Not if she wanted something out of him!
"So, tell me why you are here, dear. You know I love when you visit, but I'm not feeling very well at the moment... as you just pointed out." He sent her a small smile, queuing for her to get comfortable in one of his oversized chairs.
She obliged him, wiggling to get comfortable in the arm chair.
"Well, Lord Hokage! I don't quite know if you were made aware of this but-" he couldn't help but pause at her use of his title. Naruto never used his title!
"you see, I need somewhere to stay." The man's eyebrows shot up into his extremely receded, nonexistent hairline.
He hated to admit it, but Hiruzen was incredibly confused. He leveled her with a look. " What do you mean? Your caretaker tells me that you've been staying at the orphanage like usual. Did you happen to get into a fight with another one of the kids?"
Naruto blinked in disbelief. " Wait, you mean to tell me Gramps that she didn't tell you she kicked me out two weeks ago?!" The little blonde was reasonably outraged. That old stinky matron hadn't told the Hokage himself that she'd been kicked out of the orphanage! Instead the old hag had been lying to him!!!
Hiruzen froze before getting a good look over her.
Now that she mentioned it, she did look a lot slimmer than she used to be when he last seen her. She also looked sort of scruffy like she hadn't bathed properly, and had forgotten to comb her hair out for at least a few days... maybe longer. Dread settled in the pit of his stomach. He honestly probably wouldn't have noticed, if she hadn't said anything. He probably would've chalked it up to her being punished for getting into more fights, normal orphanage punishments like a few missed meals, or less time in the bathroom in the morning.
The old man locked eyes with her and leveled her with a stern look. "Naruto, what you are saying could get people in serious trouble." he narrowed his eyes trying to squeeze out the answer he was looking for. " I need to know if this is a prank of any sort." Hiruzen desperately wanted to believe her, but he knew better. The little girl in front of him had a reputation. Her vicious pranks were well known across the village.
Instantly, Naruto's expression fell into a slight scowl. "I honestly didn't think you were sick enough to ignore malnourished little girl, Lord Hokage. Maybe you should take off and take a nap?" She snapped back at him.
He really did not like that. Sitting up straighter the man leveled her with a sharp glared. His tone now cutting. " Naruto Uzumaki, I am still the third Hokage. That is a position you need to respect."
It did little to intimidate the girl, and she cut him off before standing quickly from her chair.
" Trust me, I respect you plenty Gramps. If I didn't, I wouldn't be in your office right now. I would be prank the living daylights out of you. I'm being dead serious right now! Because that's what this matter is... a matter matter of life or death!"
The blonde's eyes began to well up with tears.
"I- I was kicked out of the orphanage by the matron two weeks ago, she has been lying to you ever since. I've been living on one of the abandoned training grounds with my minimal camping gear that I scrounged from the dumpster. I eat one meal a day that consists of berries, forgeable greens, and edible mushrooms. I'm here because this is truly a life or death matter, and I'm choosing you to tell this to because out of everyone in this KAMI forsaken village, you care about me the most, even if that isn't much at all!!!"
The room was deathly silent, the ghosts and the Hokage thinking on the information she just given them. Her tears were falling down her cheeks now in small streams. She continued in a small whisper.
"So please forgive me, Gramps if I want to choose to believe that your inability to see my suffering is due to you being sick at the moment! I don't want you to change in my heart due to incompetence on your own behalf." Not even a moment later, she made her way to the door before shooting him one last sad smile. "Get well soon Gramps! I'll be waiting for you to visit me at ground 44!"
She quickly made her way out of the office, and as the door closed the old man sighed, he was too old for this!
He began to think over everything she said. He probably could've handled it better since she was just a kid after all, but dang Minato's kid knew how to hit you where it hurt! Rubbing his face, he felt his age all too well in that moment.
Oh how he dearly wished Minato was still here.
He turned to a photo on his desk and sighed. "Oh, what am I supposed to do with your daughter Minato? She's a menace, but she has a point!" Too bad he couldn't hear Minato's reply which consisted of yelling and cursing. The blonde was even trying to strangle the man.
Hiruzen shuddered suddenly feeling goose bumps. "Wow, It's almost like I can hear you cheering me on the other side saying good job you're doing the best you can."
Cue even more cursing that Hiruzen doesn't hear.
But then something Naruto Chan said hit home. " Wait... Did she say training ground 44!!!" The old man almost keeled over from a heart attack then and there! " That's the forest of death!" The man paled considerably, and instantly shouted for his anbu.
"ANBU DOG!" in a puff of grey a white haired teen wearing a dog mask appeared. "I need you to observe Naruto. She said she's been camping out in the training ground 44." He winced, "And if it's true...if she has truly been camping out there bring her here to me! You are dismissed now go!!!"
The dog saluted, and vanished out the window, and that brief moment alone, the old man sighed " I really hate this job!"
