CHAPTER SEVENTY-NINE
Rafe
The next day
There's something about me that I fail to admit and that's when I'm wrong. I've gotten better over time since being with Alana but having to look at her this morning and tell her that I was wrong and I shouldn't have trusted Groff was a fucking big one.
I nearly threw the doors to the police station off the fucking hinges. Normally, I'm not a fucking snitch. But getting fucked over out of 400k that had belonged in the future fund? Nah, I'm getting Groff taken the fuck down and then some.
"Somebody I can talk to in here? Where the hell is Shoupe?" I charge toward the counter and the woman looks at me like I've got seven heads.
"Sir. Calm down." She says while rolling her eyes.
I should have brought Alana with me but she was in the middle of doing some early learning courses with Leah. It killed me not to tell my wife where I was going and why and it killed me to have to stop watching her teach Leah the entire alphabet which she's getting so much better with letter identification and pronouncing the letters and making their sounds.
Even when I'm pissed I'm still a proud father and that's why I'm here and why I'm so fucking pissed. That money was for Leah and our future children. Alana is such a good mother and it's been on my mind lately about having another someday soon. Maybe within a year or two.. But without that money? There's no chance.
No new baby. No big wedding. Nothing.
"I need to make a report on Hollis Robinson and Chandler Groff, alright? They stole 400,000 dollars from me and my family. Okay? What they did is fraud and I know they're scamming half the damn island right now."
"Sir, please." The woman says and I see Shoupe coming out of his office.
"What's he yapping about?" I hear Shoupe say.
"All I'm saying is someone needs to arrest them before I fucking get my hands on them- shit, before my wife gets her hands on them! This isn't chump change they stole; this is almost half a damn million dollars!"
"Okay, calm down."
I look up for Shoupe again and he's back in his office with the door closed and another officer in there. My blood is boiling over like a pot on the stove now. My blood pressure is rising higher and higher while sweat pours down my spine.
"Alright well you need to file a report so fill out this paper work."
"Seriously? Paper work? Are you fucking kidding me? I've got all the proof right here I don't need to fill shit out." I slap the folder of papers on her desk and the copy of Wes Genrette's will that was read today which proves that I'd been scammed.
The woman rolls her eyes. "If you don't properly file a report, sir, then I can't help you."
I throw my hands up in the air. "I don't want your help you fucking melon head. I want Shoupe's help! God, this is where my tax dollars go? To melon headed idiots like yourself. Not a fucking thought in that big ass head of yours."
"Insulting me isn't going to help you, sir."
I laugh in her face and shake my head. "You know what," I grab my folder with all the papers. "I'll handle it. I'll get my fucking money back. Thanks so much for wasting my goddamn time."
As I'm going to walk out, the officer who was in the office with Shoupe comes out and calls my name. "Rafe Cameron!" He motions for me to come follow him.
"Here we fucking go." I look at the woman at the desk. "See, this is productivity. Why don't you go on back to the garden with that melon head of yours and see if a working thought develops."
"Rafe." Carl says. "Come on before you hurt yourself."
I tut at the statement. "Yeah. Whatever."
My phone rings and I feel bad having to bitch button it when it's my wife. Her beautiful smiling face as my contact photo. A selfie she took with Leah at the beach and it's become my new favorite. Leah's little teeth that took forever to grow in while she makes the cutest scrunched up smiling face.
I send her a quick text while handing the papers over to Officer Carl. Can't talk right now, everything okay?
My Bonnie texts back quickly. Rose wants to take Leah camping with Wheezie for a few days. That alright with you?
Yeah... Works fine with me. Means that Leah won't have to witness Alana attempting to kill me when I tell her that the money was scammed out of me and now we've practically lost it until I can get my hands around Chandler Groff's throat.
I'll be home soon to give Leah a big hug and kiss before she goes. I love you, Bonnie.
I love you so much, Clyde.
"Alright," Carl says. Soon as we get them in here main priority is your money. Was it wired or cash?"
"Cash..." I confess softly. "My wife is going to kill me."
Carl chuckles. "I've seen that girl handle drunks when she worked at The Wreck.. That was back when she was sixteen. I can only imagine how feisty she is now."
I swallow hard. The gulp of the bile that's burning the back of my throat so audible that Carl looks at me wide eyed. "Feisty isn't the word..."
"Terrifying, huh? Has Rafe Cameron finally met his match?" He teases as he taps some papers into an orderly form before stapling them together. "Sign right down there."
I place my phone on the desk and the screen lights up with my lock screen. A picture of Leah on the beach with her hair in pig tails and holding sea shells that Alana helped her find. She was obsessed with collecting them.
"Your little one is getting big." Carl says. "Plans for another?"
"Nope." I say as I sign the papers. "Wife's got the IUD and I have a feeling after this if I'm not cut off from it's because she cut a certain piece of my body off. So... There's that."
Carl laughs loudly. "My wife once got mad at me for betting on horses. Lost 20k in one weekend. She cut me off for 30 years."
My stomach tightens. "Th- Thirty years!?"
He nods. "Yeah, she divorced me. Got drunk one night at the bar though and we had a one-night stand. That was... Last week."
I stand up and grab my phone from the desk. "Thanks for your help, Carl."
"No problem Rafe. Good luck with your wife, I hope she doesn't divorce you. Or cut you to pieces. I'd hate to have to arrest her for assault or attempted murder. Or actual murder depending on how much you bleed out when she cuts your-"
I walk out of the office before he can finish that thought. Slamming the door behind me and scoffing. Running my hands over my hair and realizing I truly made such a big fucking mistake.
Going home though I keep it quiet for a bit. Alana already has Leah's bags packed to go with Rose and Wheezie to the campsite which Rose has been dying to take her to since last summer but Leah was way too little then.
I hold Leah close in my arms and realize she'll be gone for about a week. I've never been away from her for more than a night or two.
"Daddy loves you so much, baby girl... I'm sorry if I fucked everything up but I'll make it up to you. Alright?" A tear slides down my face as I talk to her alone. With her pacifier in her mouth she still smiles and touches my face. Wiping away the tears with her small yet chunky fingers. "I'm sorry I failed you.. I just... I just wanted to be like my old man, you know? Selfless. Doing whatever I can for my kid... And just like he took a bullet for his daughter, I'd take one for you." I kiss her again before bringing her down stairs back to Rose. Leah leaves and takes my heart with her.
