Author's pov:
The room was quiet, the only sound coming from the soft turning of pages.
Dark Shadow sat alone in a dimly lit corner, absorbed in a thick, leather; bound book titled as "The Art of Staying Ahead."
It was no ordinary book; it was filled with lessons on staying one step ahead, cunning philosophies, manipulating situations, subtle tricks, and life's secrets on how to outsmart anyone who might be foolish enough to stand in the way.
This was Dark Shadow's kind of read.
Every line seemed to echo their own approach to life, offering a silent affirmation of the way they played their game; calculated, careful, always staying one step ahead.
As Dark Shadow read, a slight smirk tugged at the corner of their mouth.
The book's words mirrored their own beliefs: to create confusion, to keep everyone guessing, and to make sure no one ever got close enough to predict their next move.
They continued reading, so engrossed in the page detailing the importance of never letting one's guard down.
The quiet night continued, undisturbed, with only the faint scratch of a pen now and then as they jotted notes on the book's margins.
After a while, Dark Shadow closed the book and stood, stretching, feeling a sense of quiet satisfaction.
The sound of a clock ticking in the background filled the silence as they placed the book on the table and walked toward the small kitchen.
They prepared a simple dinner, nothing elaborates, and returned to the table with a plate, their gaze falling back on the book.
With one hand holding a fork and the other skimming through a new chapter, Dark Shadow read about strategies for misdirection, tips on hiding in plain sight.
Every bite they took was calm, unhurried.
Dark Shadow turned a page, reading a quote that seemed to echo through the room: "The strongest weapon you have is the mind. Use it to stay hidden, stay safe."
Dark shadow read out this quote loudly, murmuring to themselves and nodding their head.
For Dark Shadow, this was the calm, the kind of solitude that offered focus and clarity.
But unknown to them, that calm was about to be disrupted.
Because there was something that Dark Shadow didn't know.
Just miles away, under the same dark sky, someone was heading toward them; someone who had been quietly closing in, tracing their steps with the same intensity.
That someone was Darkling, and tonight, Darkling was coming prepared.
Tonight here, Dark Shadow was reading about the power of the mind and the art of staying hidden; while completely unaware that someone had finally found the way to breach their shadows.
Dark Shadow continued eating in complete silence, eyes moving over the words in the book.
Once finished, they placed the empty plate aside and headed back to their room, checking their phone on the table which had been charging for a while.
