Next morning, as expected, Nandani walked inside our home. We didn't interrupt. I knew why she came even though she was kicked out yesterday by Varun. Because her ego was hurt. And she wanted to prove that she could walk right inside this house without us interrupting in between, only because she had access to our little secret that we were ready to keep no secret any longer.

She walked straight to my mother-in-law who was sitting beneath the tree and sewing something. They both started smiling and talking, Nandani's eyes flying from time to time to look at us — me and Varun.

Varun was at home too as today was Sunday and it was his holiday. I was picking rice and Varun was reading a book.

Maa-ji called out, “Malini ! Do glass sharbat banao Zara, hamare aur Nandani bitiya ke liye.”

I placed the plate of rice aside and stood up slowly. Varun looked at me. I walked towards the kitchen, but Varun followed behind me, because I know he doesn't like me doing any work alone.

“Laiye, hum bana de, Malini.”

I shook my head, “Aap bas hume nimbu aur chini ka dabba dijiye, Varun.”

He nodded and passed me a lemon and box of sugar.

I prepared the sharbat and gave the glasses to Varun, “Jaiye, de aaiye.”

He rolled his eyes but went forward to give the glass anyway to them. I looked at how Nandani batted her eyelashes upon my husband and I wanted to poke her eyes out, but I controlled myself. Varun gave one glass to Maa-ji and another to Nandani. She muttered, “Dhanyavaad, Varun.”

He ignored her and walked back to me.

I looked at him, and commented playfully, “Aapki bachpan ki dost badi hi besharam hai.”

He laughed. “Hume kya pata tha aisi hogi. Najdik se thodi hi jaana tha humne usko, shaadi thodi hi karni thi.”

“Magar usey toh aapse hi karni thi.”

He frowned, “Nahin. Aisa thodi hain.”

I laughed, “Aisa hi hai, mere patidev. Uss din humse puch rahin thi, ‘Humare Varun ko takleef kyu di?’”

He widened his eyes, “Sach?”

I nodded. He nudged his shoulder against mine, “Dekh rahin hain, ladkiyan deewani hain humare peeche.”

I let out a soft laugh, “Peeche hi nahin, aage bhi. Itni deewani hain ki bhaang mein nashe ki dawa mila kar pila rahin hai aapko, ek baar toh aap unke ho jaye.”

He chuckled, “Aisi dosti se darr lagne laga hai ab hume. Aj kal dost naa hona hi behtar hai.”

“Aaphi ko dosti karna rehta hai har kisi se. Yaad hain? Humse bhi dosti ke liye aapne pucha tha.”

He shrugged, “Haan toh aap humari biwi hain. Aapse puch liya toh isme kya galat kiya humne?”

I rolled my eyes, “Aur kisi se mat puch lijiyega.”

“Kaan pakre ab hum. Dosti? Woh kya hoti hai?”

I laughed.

“Aapko kya lagta hain, humne Jo socha hai woh hoga?” I asked.

He smirked, nudging my shoulder, “Ab aapne kya socha woh toh aap hi jaane. Hume toh Darr lag raha hai.”

I clung on to his arm, “Aap na. Jyada soch rahe hain. Jo ho gaya so Gaya. Aage kya hoga iss baat par dhyan dete hai. Humara rishta bilkul surakshit hain, aap chinta mat kijiye.”
