Leaping shadows fell upon the faces of the observers. Each one eagerly watched the enticing yet sinister scene laid out before them. As the fire was fed with a new kerosene coated body, the flames would jump up and reach for the stars.
Slowly but surely the pile of soon to be desceased was thrown into the hungry flames. But the audience was not satisfied, they needed to feel the pleasure in hearing the brutal screams of the fire's next victim.
In a second, a new batch of gagged bodies was carted towards the burning beast. A young boy rushed towards the can of kerosene and exerted so much energy trying to life the can, he huffed and puffed the whole short walk back. A man, presumably the little boy's father, lifted the boy upon his shoulders. Then, the innocent looking child doused the live bodies in a bath of kerosene. Now, the bodies were prepared.
Two robust men lifted the first victim out of the cart with ease. She struggled in the tight grasp of the men, wriggling ferociously. However, she received no pity for every on-looker was here to see just this. And with one last struggle she gave up, accepting the fact that her life wouldn't be spared. One of the men ripped the gag from her mouth.
"Any last words?" He asked in a deep, gravelly voice.
The woman opened her mouth to speak but it was too late. The men had already started the process of throwing her into the diminishing flame. Screams of terror and agony erupted from the dying woman. Tourists mercilessly took pictures and videos on their cellphones. Me, I did not thrive on the joy of seeing an innocent person burn, I was mortified by the outright cruelty of society. With one last disgusted glance, I pushed my way through the crowd, knocking over anyone who did not move away.
I ran and ran, tears steaming down my face. I ran until I couldn't see the fire anymore, until I was probably three towns over. I collapsed onto the sidewalk and rocked back and forth in a fetal position.
"Why her!" I screamed, kicking the ground until I couldn't feel my feet. "Why my mom?!"
