Emma arrived in the city with little more than a suitcase, a head full of dreams, and the determination to build a new life. The bustling streets and towering buildings filled her with a sense of awe and excitement, but also a tinge of nervousness. This was her chance to leave the past behind, to make something of herself far from the small town she once called home.

After a few weeks of searching, she secured a position at one of the city’s most prestigious hotels. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was a start, a stepping stone to something greater. She was assigned to work in the events department, helping coordinate and assist with the hotel’s many high-profile gatherings. It was demanding, but she threw herself into the work, eager to prove herself.

One evening, as she finished setting up for an exclusive event, she spotted a man across the room. He was tall, impeccably dressed, with a presence that seemed to command attention without effort. His dark gaze swept over the crowd, assessing, almost predatory, before landing on her. Emma felt a shiver run down her spine as their eyes met, his gaze intense and unwavering.

She quickly looked away, busying herself with rearranging glasses on the bar, but she could still feel his eyes on her. A part of her wanted to avoid him, to keep her distance from someone who exuded such power, yet another part of her was inexplicably drawn to him.

Moments later, she felt a presence beside her. She looked up to find him standing there, his gaze fixed on her with an intensity that made her heart race.

“Good evening,” he said, his voice low, smooth, with a hint of something darker beneath the surface. “I haven’t seen you here before.”

Emma cleared her throat, willing herself to remain composed. “I’m new,” she replied, meeting his gaze despite the nerves fluttering in her stomach. “Just started a few weeks ago.”

He nodded, studying her with a curiosity that felt almost invasive. “What’s your name?”

“Emma,” she said, her voice steadier now. “Emma Brooks.”

He extended a hand, a small smile playing at the corner of his lips. “Dominic Hayes.”

The name sounded familiar, though she couldn’t place it immediately. She shook his hand, feeling the strength in his grip, the warmth of his skin against hers.

As she pulled her hand back, she noticed the way he was watching her, a hint of amusement in his gaze, as though he found her interesting in a way that went beyond casual conversation.

“Well, Emma Brooks,” he murmured, “I hope you’re finding the city to your liking.”

She managed a small smile. “I am. It’s a big change, but I like it here.”

Dominic nodded, his gaze never leaving hers. “Good. The city has a lot to offer… if you know where to look.”

There was something in his tone, a suggestion, as though he were inviting her to ask more, to step into a world she couldn’t quite see. She felt a thrill of curiosity mixed with caution, but before she could respond, he straightened, his expression turning serious.

“Be careful, Emma,” he said softly, his voice barely above a whisper. “The city can be… unforgiving. Especially to those who are new.”

A shiver ran through her at his words, the warning implicit in his tone. She opened her mouth to reply, but he had already turned, disappearing into the crowd, leaving her with a sense of mystery—and a curiosity that she couldn’t quite shake.

For the rest of the evening, she found herself looking for him, scanning the crowd in hopes of seeing him again. But Dominic Hayes was nowhere to be found, as though he had vanished as quickly as he had appeared.

As she left the hotel that night, the memory of their encounter lingered in her mind, the intensity of his gaze, the quiet warning in his words. She knew she should forget him, that he was likely just another wealthy man with a penchant for mystery. But something told her that their paths would cross again, and when they did, her life might never be the same.
