I grip my mothers hand tighter and tighter, until we reach the front, two black doors of the colorful building. Looking back now it was a tan rectangular building with a couple purple butterflies covering one of the windows. I attach to her hip, still gripping her hand so hard I feel her fake nails pressing into my skin.
My mom pulls the door open and I get a glimpse of the early 2000s preschool setting. I try to take in as much as I can, but I'm pulled aside with my mom to the front desk. My mom finishes signing the consent papers, and just as she closes the door on her way out, I get pulled off to the main learning room. I am overwhelmed by the ABCs and color charts, rainbows on walls and rugs, and the amount of kids running crazy throughout the small playroom.
I sit down at one of the tables, and just sit there. I watch the other kids, fight and play with toys, and I just watch, not making a sound. I sit there for about fifteen minutes, when the teacher, Ms. Adler finally comes, "Sweetie what's wrong?" she said, "Nothing" I quietly reply with. "Ok well, you can't just sit here lets find something for you." I then follow her around the room, as she shows me different crafts, coloring sheets, toys, but then we leads me to the far back of the room quite a ways away from where most kids were playing. "This is the last stop," Ms. Adler said, I just stand there shyly in awe. What was I looking at you may be asking? A huge shelf of children's books. Hundreds of books.
Without saying a word I grabbed the first book I could see which just so happened to be the first book in the "Peter Rabbit" series. I then plopped down on the rug sitting against of the rainbow pillows. I open up the book, and turn to the title page when I hear a quiet voice. I look over to my left and see a tiny kid, about my age probably with curly brown hair looking in my direction. "I read that book" he quietly said. "Oh I say, is it a um good book?" I ask "yeah" he said. I then turn back, and flip the page.
For the rest of the day we just sat there and read. I finished half of the series in just that one day. At lunch I retrieved my lunch from my cubie. I carry the Hello Kitty metal lunch box back to the main room, and sit at a table. The other children crowd around the other tables, trading Go-go squeeze, and apple slices without the skin. I open my lunchbox when I look over to see the kid I had sat with in the library sit across the table from me. "So what is your name?" he asks "Margaret" I say "I'm Liam" he responds with. I finish eating my meat and cheese Lunchable, and apple sauce, I then see my mother walk through those two black doors.
"Mom!" I say, and get up, and give her a giant hug. She then takes me, and signs me out, right as we are walking out the door, I shout "Wait!" I then run back to the lunch table to see Liam not there. I then run to the library, and see him sitting and reading " The Light In The Attic" I stop in my tracks, and Liam looks up "see you tomorrow?" I ask. Liam nods his head and smiles, and I smile back.
When I run back to my mom she asks "Where did you go?" " I forgot something" I say, looking behind me and giving Liam a quick wave. We walk out down the sidewalk to the parking lot and my mom straps me in the backseat. She turns on the radio, the first song being "Tin Man" by Miranda Lambert. "So did you make any friends?" Mom asks, " Yes, yes I think I did." "Well that's good." She says while smiling at me. I smiled back, and then looked out my window for the rest of the drive.
