it was mid june, and life was going great. seon eventually started bothering them less, teachers were barely giving out homework, exam season ended, and most of all, sunoo and jungwon's friendship was amazing.

it was the weekend, and the two were hanging out at their favourite park. it was a habit for them at this point.

they loved their one on one alone time, where they could just freely talk. what was especially great was that literally no one else in the city went to that park.

sunlight filtered softly through the trees, and the warm breeze gently swept through every once in a while. birds were happily chirping from afar, jumping around in bushes.

jungwon's arm was casually draped over sunoo's shoulder, as the two sat closely and contently spoke about whatever was on their mind.

"did i tell you my dad's moving cities in a few weeks?" jungwon said.

"no, why is he leaving?" sunoo asked.

"work, or something. i think my parents just hate their marriage but don't wanna divorce.."

"that sucks. you and jake won't be going anywhere right?"

"no, don't worry."

"will you miss him?"

sunoo knew jungwon brought it up for a reason. he was never great at directly expressing his emotions, so when he spoke about something, it meant that there was more to it.

"i don't know. i knew he was never a great dad, well no, he was never even a dad. he spoke to me probably twice in my whole childhood, and neither of it was sincere. i hate how every time he comes home he riles up my mom and they start fighting. i feel like i shouldn't miss him, but i do..?"

"hm, seems like you need a father figure"

"you think so?"

"mhm"

"i'll never have one though"

"hang out with mine, he loves you"

"thanks. but i don't wanna use you for your parents. i wanna be with you instead."

"me too, i'm just so great" sunoo laughed, not even trying to hide his rosy cheeks.

"oh shut up."

"how's your mom?"

"eh, she's fine. i think it'll be good for her to be away from him"

"but you still miss him?"

"i mean, i guess i want him to leave, but i'm just so used to him, or the idea of him, that i feel sad he won't be here anymore."

"maybe it'll be good for you too. to be away from him."

"maybe."

"so, how are your parents?" jungwon asked.

"they're fine." sunoo answered. "they're practically over the moon even since we became friends"

jungwon chuckled. "really?"

"yeah really, i never had any before remember?"

"not even like a mutual?"

"nope. maybe a few in kindergarten or something, but ever since i became sick, everyone avoided me like i was a contagious."

"oh.. i should've come sooner. so we could be friends."

"i don't think you would've wanted to be with me"

"why?"

"well when you met me, i already went through surgery and stuff. i was better already."

"your health doesn't define your personality, i wouldn't have cared."

sunoo smiled, and leaned onto jungwon's shoulder.

"do you ever wonder where we would be right now if you didn't sit down with me during gym that day?" sunoo wondered out loud.

"i think we would be exactly where we were right now" jungwon replied, sincerely looking into sunoo's eyes.

"because we're meant to be?" sunoo smirked.

"hm, precisely. we would've ended up together either way."

"i can't imagine what it would be like if i was with someone else"

"like seon?"

"oh hell no, never"

"it's good you don't need to though, you already have me"

"that's true." sunoo smiled. "i'm glad we can be together forever."

". . . me too."

he started fiddling with sunoo's hands, something that was pretty normal between them. "so, are you going to ni-ki's dance competition next week?"

"yup, i'm excited to see him perform." sunoo said. "it's been a while since i went."

"same, i think he choreographed this one on his own"

"oh yeah, he named it brought the heat back didn't he?"

"yup, i'm curious what it's gonna look like"

"i just know it's cat themed, totally not recommend by me!"

sunoo laughed. "you and your cats"

"i love cats. if i were to be reincarnated, i would choose to be a cat."

"then who do you love more, me or cats?"

"obviously, it's cats" jungwon joked.

"heyyy" sunoo pouted.

"hah, you're cute like this" jungwon chuckled.

"oh be quiet"

"but you are cute, really."

"...mhm, i know i am" sunoo grinned. "i'm irresistible."

"that's right" jungwon nodded, blood rushing up to his face and ears, painting it in an obvious red colour.

"you're not gonna disagree with me?" sunoo asked.

"nope..."

"because...?"

"—because i want us to be more than friends." jungwon blurted out, the colour on his face becoming more pigmented by the second.

for a second, fear washed over his body. what if he had just singlehandedly ruined their friendship?

sunoo was frozen there, blinking his eyes to make sure he wasn't dreaming. it sure felt like a dream, a good one in fact. the silence, however, worried jungwon.

"hyung, please say somethi-"

there it was. it happened. sunoo had leaned in, and pressed his lips against jungwon's. it felt soft, warm, full of promise. nothing was rushed or too dramatic, just two boys kissing under the sky, which was now painted in hues of pink and orange.

it felt like time froze, at the highest point of the sky's beauty, and at the peak of connection between them.

it was the best day of their lives, the day their hearts finally spoke out loud and unlocked the hidden feelings.

in that moment, things felt like it was only going to get better.

it felt like it.
