CHAPTER EIGHTY-THREE
Rafe
There was one time when I was a kid that my dad took me out on the boat and while we were deep sea fishing, a storm hit. A really bad storm. The water had been so choppy I held on to dear life thinking the ship as going to flip over.
I remember the look in my old man's face when he said, "We're going to be alright, son. Put on your life vest and help me secure all loose items. If we have to jump then we jump. You can hold your breath right? You swim better than anyone else I've ever seen in Kildare. You'll be alright, son."
But there had been a sinking feeling in my stomach then. Just like there is right now as the room sways. Alana comes in, trying to steady herself and she pulls a knife from behind her. Cutting the ropes and letting me free. But I don't move from the bed except to sit up and let my feet touch the ground.
"What's going on out there?" I ask softly enough not to raise any alarms to her. "Feels a little-"
"Storm." She mutters as she turns pale. Her eyes that usually captivate me with the stars in them have gone blank. A shade of green appearing on her cheeks while dark circles swirl under her starless eyes.
I reach my hand to her thigh and she jolts up. "Rafe, I don't know what to do. I'm terrified."
"Everyone needs a life vest. Alright? Let's get to the deck and come up with a plan. Everyone stays close together and we get all emergency gear ready." I come to my feet, a little unsteady at first from days of being in that bed. Only being let up by Alana to go to the bathroom but she kept me tied on a leash like a fucking animal. Humiliating when I have to tell her to let go of the rope so I can shit in private.
I push a strand of Alana's hair back. She fails to let her eyes meet with mine and the pang to heart that tightens my chest is worse than anything else I've felt before. "Look at me..." I whisper breathlessly. "You can swim, can't you? Remember when you talked about Titanic when we left Barbados? Remember how you made me watch it over and over again after that?" She nods. "Yeah... And that scene where Rose holds Jack and he tells her when to take in a deep breath and they go down together? Worst case scenario, that's what we have to do. Okay? You be my Rose. I'll be your Jack."
"Have we evolved?" Those eyes flutter up at me. Those beautiful doe eyes. "No more Bonnie and Clyde? We're Rose and Jack now?"
"As long as you promise to never let go." I tease back at her.
"Other way around, Jack." She chuckles slightly and I press a kiss to her perfectly pouted lips.
Up on the deck it's chaos. Lightning strikes and the power goes out. I can hear John B screaming that he's going in blind. He can't steer. There's no fucking power and nothing he can do. I rush in there with Alana quickly trailing behind me.
"No." I turn to her. "Go down to the galley with Sarah and the others-"
She shakes her head.
"Don't be stubborn!" I shout but I don't mean it to scare her. I want her to get it through her head that this is deadly. This is dangerous and her being up here? Is the worst of it. "Alana go down into the galley! John B and I got this and.. And if something goes wrong at least you'd get home to Leah."
This should have deterred her and sent her running for the galley but it didn't. She gripped tightly onto my hand and stared into me with eyes filled with fear and yet... Love. There was so much love resting in her eyes that it soothed the ache pooling in my stomach.
