Friday, March 29

Today was Good Friday, and while my family stuck to all the usual traditions, it still felt pretty familiar. The day started with my mom announcing that "we're going to keep things simple and peaceful," which I immediately took to mean "no chores" and "lots of gaming time." But of course, that was just a prelude to her saying, "You're going to church, and you're going to like it."

Sammy, as always, was bouncing around like he'd had way too much sugar, asking over and over when we could leave. I swear, I was this close to taking a nap right there, but I tried to look all deep and thoughtful while trying to stay awake. Sammy kept nudging me every few minutes to ask if it was over yet, which made it even harder to pretend I wasn't struggling to stay awake. But we survived, and then it was home for the real fun.

Lunch was the highlight of the day. My parents have this tradition of making this huge fish feast for Good Friday. I'm not a huge fish guy, but the way they cook it—crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside—actually makes it pretty great. Sammy and I had this ridiculous competition to see who could stack the most food on their plate without it tipping over. I totally won, though Sammy argued that his was better because he "strategically placed the rolls." Sure, buddy.

The rest of the day was pretty chill. We did the family movie thing, and my dad, being dad, insisted on doing these victory dances whenever he won at trivia. I'm not sure what was more embarrassing—the fact that he was moonwalking in the living room or that Sammy and I were just sitting there in awkward silence, not sure whether to laugh or die of secondhand embarrassment.

By the end of the day, I was definitely ready to game again, but I also didn't mind the family time. It was nice to just relax and be together. Three more days of break left before school starts again... and I'm not ready for that.
