Chapter 1: The Tower Beckons
"Congratulations! You have been selected as a climber in the Tower of Trials."
I blinked at the glowing blue hologram floating before me, its letters shimmering with a faint light. The message felt surreal, almost like a prank-except there was no one around to pull it off.
I rubbed my eyes and took in my surroundings. The room was stark white and eerily empty, its smooth walls stretching into nothingness. There were no doors, no windows-just an unsettling sense of isolation.
"What the hell is this? Am I dreaming?" I muttered, my voice echoing faintly in the void. My mind scrambled for an explanation. This was the kind of thing you'd see in a web novel-someone getting pulled into a mysterious world and forced to fight their way to survival.
I bit my lip. "Maybe if I say 'Status,' something will pop up?" It was worth a shot.
To my surprise, the glowing panel vanished, only to be replaced by another translucent screen filled with information.
---
[Status]
Name: Ajit Chetteri
Race: Human
Health: 100%
Mana: 100%
Fatigue: 0%
Level: 1
Skill Slots: 0/1
Floors Reached: 1
Coins: Infinite
---
I froze, staring at the word "Infinite" next to the coin count. My heart skipped a beat. "Infinite coins? What does that even mean? And why do I only have one skill slot?"
It didn't make sense. My instincts screamed that there was more going on, but I had no answers. The panel didn't offer any hints, just a cold and sterile summary of my stats.
But there was one thing I could do. If there were infinite coins, then logically...
"Shop!" I called out.
The status window dissolved, replaced by another glowing screen. This one bore a single word in bold letters:
---
[Shop]
---
I squinted at the empty interface, waiting for something to happen. Nothing changed. There were no categories, no items-just a blank screen, as though taunting me.
"What am I supposed to do? Do I have to be specific?" I muttered under my breath. "Uh, skills? Show me skills!"
The screen flickered. A new menu appeared, displaying a list of skills-but something was off. Only a handful of items were visible, and each one was grayed out.
Locked
Locked
Locked
Every single entry was inaccessible. My frustration boiled over. "You've got to be kidding me! What's the point of a shop if I can't use it?"
I paced the empty room, my steps echoing faintly. "So I have infinite coins, but I can't spend them. And I have only one skill slot but no way to get a skill. Perfect," I muttered sarcastically.
Then it hit me. Maybe the shop wasn't broken. Maybe... the locked items were tied to something I hadn't done yet.
I stopped pacing, staring at the shop screen again. "This is a trial," I said slowly, piecing it together. "If this is a trial, maybe I have to earn my way to unlocking these things. Climbing floors... maybe that's the key."
It was just a theory, but it felt right. The locked skills, the single slot-everything pointed to some sort of progression system. I didn't know how it worked, but I'd have to figure it out.
For now, there was only one thing I could do. Wait. Or maybe...
The room suddenly trembled, as if responding to my thoughts. A deep, resonating hum filled the air, and the ground beneath my feet shifted. A doorway formed in the blank wall ahead, its edges glowing faintly.
I stepped closer, hesitating just long enough to read the text that appeared above it:
---
[Floor 1: Enter the Trial? Yes/No]
"No" I said.
To be continued...
