The days passed, and Ryan continued to serve in the DeWinter mansion, doing his best to stay out of the way and avoid suspicion. But his efforts to alter the course of events were subtle at first. He sabotaged the assassination attempts, even if they were small-an unnoticed poisoned drink, a broken trap that was supposed to catch her off guard-but no one noticed his interference, not even Casey.
She still barely acknowledged his existence. To her, he was just another nameless servant. But Ryan knew the truth. He couldn't simply stand by and let her die. She deserved better.
One evening, after Ryan had prevented another attempt on her life, he saw Casey standing alone in the garden, staring at the moon. Her back was straight, her posture regal, but there was a softness in her expression as she gazed out at the stars.
Ryan approached cautiously. "Lady Casey," he said softly, unsure if she would even respond.
She turned, her red eyes locking with his. For a moment, her gaze flickered with something he couldn't place-surprise, perhaps, or curiosity. "What do you want, servant?"
Ryan took a deep breath. "I just want to help," he said, his voice steady. "I know you're not as cold as people think. You're not the villain they say you are."
Casey raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a small smirk. "Is that so?" Her voice was like ice, but there was a spark of something else in her eyes. "And why would you care?"
"Because," Ryan hesitated, his heart pounding in his chest, "I believe you deserve a chance to live. A chance to be free from the lies."
Casey's expression softened just slightly, and for a brief moment, he saw something in her eyes that he had never expected-vulnerability.
