Agatha softly closed the door behind her as she crept back into the cabin. The strange girl had stayed behind, telling Agatha to come back to the same place once she got the Darkhold.
Agatha didn't intend on returning.
But now she knew how to get the Darkhold. And it was amazingly simple.
She entered her room and jumped to find Rio sitting on the bed.
"Agatha," Rio said blankly. "Why weren't you here?"
"I couldn't sleep," Agatha replied, taking off her cloak. "So I went for a walk."
"I just couldn't find you, so I got worried." Rio said carefully, like she didn't want Agatha to know she got worried over such a simple thing.
"I'm touched," Agatha replied, standing in front of Rio. She braced herself, because the only thing she needed to do was get Rio on her side in order for her to get the Darkhold. "But I have something to tell you, Rio."
"The Darkhold?" Rio snapped her fingers and Agatha's notebook shot out of her drawer and into Rio's hand. She maintained eye contact with Agatha the whole time, staring so hard Agatha felt like it was eating into her soul.
Agatha's jaw dropped open. "Hey!" She snatched the book from Rio's hand.
"You can't blame me for wanting to know what's been making my soon-to-be-wife anxious all of the time," Rio said, crossing her arms.
Agatha tried to speak, but she was too flustered. "Rio—"
"You know, you could have asked me if you wanted to know stuff," Rio continued. "I could have told you more than half of what's in there."
Agatha held the notebook tight to her chest. "I was going to tell you about it anyway!"
"But I'm worried, Agatha!" Rio exclaimed angrily as she jumped up. "Only a couple weeks ago you were convincing me to agree to marry you, and ever since Thanos you've been mad all the time!"
"Well, sorry if I was a little put off by your ex-boyfriend!"
"But he's not why you've been angry, is he?" Rio replied coldly. Agatha flinched back at her tone. Rio nodded as she watched Agatha's reaction "No, it's the infinity stones that you're on about."
Agatha shrugged, trying to act normal. Inside, she was shaking. Rio knew her well. She knew her a little too much. "Fine, you caught me."
Rio stepped closer, her face only a foot away from Agatha's. "What is it you really want, Agatha?" She spoke in a low whisper.
"... I don't know," Agatha admitted. "Maybe it's because I want you, but I also don't want to be underneath you for the rest of my life, or even eternity. Maybe it's because I'm tired of always being told what I'm supposed to be and being with you just reminds me of my powers. Our deal is..."
Rio's eyes softened. "You just want out of the deal?"
"Yes, I want out of the deal. It's getting a bit tiring going out every week and killing witch after witch. They're getting rare, you know," Agatha said, though she didn't say what else she was thinking. That every time she used her power she loved to gain more. That she loved the feeling it gave her. That she loved being the most powerful in the room...
And yet, she was still just a minion of Death, who was more powerful than she could ever be.
And now that she knew those infinity stones existed, especially knowing that she could never use them, she knew that her power wasn't good enough to take on the world. Not even close.
"But I can't break a deal," Rio said, looking down.
"But the Darkhold might be able to," Agatha said, taking the book from her arm and putting it into Rio's hands.
Rio laughed. "You think the Darkhold can do that? Witches' promises are sacred."
Agatha raised her eyebrows. "It can't hurt to try." She leaned closer. "Plus I feel like you need to make up for the whole Thanos thing."
Rio looked at Agatha, obviously not buying it, but amusement danced in her eyes. She gave a small smile and nodded. "Sure... we can give it a try."
Agatha grinned.
"But," Rio said loudly before Agatha could do anything. "You have to promise not to let it affect you in any way. You have to let me help you."
"I promise," Agatha wrapped her arms around Rio's shoulders. She meant her promise. The Darkhold would only be something she used for power, to prove to herself she wasn't powerless.
Rio leaned farther into the hug as Agatha explained what they had to do.
