We all just came back from golfing. My wife, Julia, had the better score out of the sixth of us. Jaime was second, Sophie was third, Alexa was fourth, I was fifth, and Cindy was last. We are eating lunch that Alexa and Jaime ordered from an Italian restaurant we frequent.
" Pay up your losses. I will only accept 500 in cash and not in coins."
I look at my ex-wife, and she says what. It was money in pennies. We all told Julia it was funny but not funny when she had Cindy roll them all up the next day.
We are eating our lunch with a glass of zinfandel out on the patio. Alexa and Jaime's cellphones are ringing. They answered them and listened for a while. They start crying. Julia and I get up to hug our former mentees. Alexa is trying to tell us but can't get the words out. Jaime finally got her composure together and stated it was the hospital in Madrid. We all knew their parents were enjoying a joint vacation. They were flying back home when their plane landed in the ocean in Miami. Apparently, a military plane who was doing a training hit their plane. No one survived. Their parents' bodies were only identified by their dental records."We can leave now to Miami you two. We all are very sorry."
Alexa finally is able to talk. She tells us the military will be bringing their remains. All of their parents served in the army. They met their spouse in the army.
Our wives leave to go get tissues for them, and they return. They blow their noses and wipe their tears. They thank our wives.
Silvia asks them what they need from us. They day after they finish eating to start notifying family and friends. They will supply us with the names and numbers. We all are heartbroken. We had just returned from a funeral of one of Sophie and Silvia's good childhood friends. We are done, and we pour them some bourbon after they return with the address books. We started calling the people and telling each one only what they told us. We would do group texts when we know more. Jaime and Alexa are drinking a lot, numbing their pain. We know the pain won't go away. We all have been through this. We finally take the bourbon away. Cindy empties the rest on the grass."Enough, we know this is a shock for you two. We miss them too. Julia and I have known them since your freshman year in high school. We will help you with the services once you two decide on what you want to do."
" Jaime and I already know. They want to be buried in Mexico with our other family members. They have plots already next to their parents. We just have to update the marble stones. They didn't want any services, only us. Our families know this. They just are in shock as we are. We just need to put an obituary in the local papers here, Madrid and Mexico. They wrote their own. We will sell their belongings that are not left for anyone in their wills. We will lease their homes to army military families. These were their requests to us both. They told us about their will and requests 5 months ago. Cindy, will you have your crew fly us to Mexico, and you four get a hotel for us all?" " Sweetie, just let me know, and we will do everything else. We just need time alone. Julia, we will pay you later. "
" Sweetie, I am in no rush, and we will. We will clean everything before we go and will lock up your home. Go rest."They hugged us and left for their bedroom. We cleaned up and left. Julia locks the lock, and we get into Cindy's truck and Silvia's escalade.
