The following days felt like a blur, as if everything had shifted just slightly out of alignment. Elise couldn't shake the feeling that something was watching her, something lurking just beyond her peripheral vision. It wasn't just the mirror anymore—it was everywhere. In the way people spoke to her, in the silence of her room, in the sound of her own breathing. Every little noise seemed amplified, like the world was trying to tell her something she wasn't quite ready to hear.
After Caleb's visit, she found it harder and harder to focus on anything. Her schoolwork had become a distant concern, and even her friendships felt like they were slipping through her fingers. She tried to convince herself that it was just the stress of everything happening, but deep down, she knew the truth—there was something more to it. The mirror, the whispers, the strange reflections—it all felt like an invitation. An invitation she wasn't sure she wanted to accept, but couldn't seem to resist.
It was late one evening when the urge to confront it became overwhelming. Elise had spent the entire day in her room, avoiding the world outside. She hadn't spoken to Caleb in days, and she felt a gnawing emptiness in her chest every time she thought about him. But the mirror, with its quiet pull, kept drawing her back. It was like a magnetic force she couldn't escape, no matter how hard she tried.
She stood in front of it, staring into the depths of her own reflection. Her face seemed eerily calm, as if it didn't belong to her at all. She ran her fingers along the edge of the mirror, feeling the cool glass beneath her touch. There was something ancient about it—something that didn't belong in her small bedroom. Something that had been there far longer than she could comprehend.
And then it happened again. A whisper. Soft, barely audible, but unmistakable.
"Elise..."
Her heart skipped a beat. She jumped back, but this time, the mirror didn't shift or distort. It was simply still, as if it had never spoken to her at all. She tried to calm herself, reminding herself that she was tired, that she hadn't slept well in days. But the unease wouldn't go away.
"Elise, it's time to understand."
The voice was clearer now, and Elise felt the chill run down her spine. It wasn't just a trick of her mind. This time, she knew. The voice wasn't from within her own head. It was coming from the mirror.
With shaking hands, she reached out and touched the glass again. She wasn't sure what she was expecting. Maybe to see something different in her reflection? Or maybe to hear more of the cryptic words that had been haunting her for days. Whatever it was, she wasn't ready for what came next.
The mirror flickered.
At first, it was almost imperceptible, just a slight shimmer along the edges of her reflection. But then it spread, like ripples in a pond, distorting the image until she was no longer looking at herself. The reflection in the glass wasn't Elise. It was someone else—someone with familiar eyes.
Caleb.
Her breath caught in her throat, and she stumbled back, almost falling to the floor. "What... what is this?" she whispered, her voice trembling. Her mind raced, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. How was this possible? Why was Caleb's face in the mirror, staring back at her with the same confused expression she felt inside?
The reflection of Caleb in the mirror was just as real as the one she knew in person. But it wasn't him—not entirely. The person in the glass seemed distorted, like a version of him that didn't belong. His eyes glowed faintly, like they were no longer completely human. There was something in his gaze that unsettled her, something dark and unfamiliar.
"Elise," the voice said again, this time louder, more insistent. "You can't escape this. Not anymore."
She stumbled backward, knocking into the desk behind her. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she felt as if the room was closing in on her. She couldn't breathe. She couldn't think. She couldn't understand.
"What's happening?" she gasped, her voice rising with panic. "What do you want from me?"
The reflection in the mirror flickered again, and for a brief moment, it wasn't Caleb anymore. It was her.
Her reflection smiled at her. But it wasn't the smile she recognized. It was twisted—too wide, too cruel. Her own eyes, dark and hollow, stared back at her from the mirror.
"Run," the voice whispered. "Before it's too late."
The words rang in her ears as the mirror returned to normal. The distorted version of Caleb was gone, replaced by her own reflection, which now seemed calm and distant.
Elise stumbled back, her mind racing. She was shaking uncontrollably, her body stiff with fear. Her thoughts were jumbled, and she couldn't make sense of anything anymore. She had to get out of here. She had to escape whatever this was before it consumed her completely.
But no matter how much she tried to convince herself to leave, she couldn't tear her eyes away from the mirror. It was like the glass was holding her captive, forcing her to look at the truth she wasn't ready to face.
"Elise, you're not alone," Caleb's voice echoed in her mind, his face from earlier appearing unbidden. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to push away the thought. She had to face this alone, didn't she? No one could help her.
But a small, lingering part of her wanted to tell Caleb everything. She wanted to reach out, to confess the strange things she had seen. Maybe he could make sense of it. Maybe he could help her understand what was going on.
But what if he thought she was crazy?
"Caleb," she whispered, the name hanging in the air like a lifeline. She needed to see him. She needed him to tell her that everything was going to be okay.
She grabbed her phone and quickly typed a message: Can you come over? I need to talk.
As she hit send, she felt a strange sense of calm wash over her. Maybe Caleb could help her. Maybe he could make the madness stop.
But even as the thought crossed her mind, she couldn't shake the feeling that whatever was behind the mirror had already begun to make its move.
And soon, it would claim her, just like it had claimed everything else.
