Elise stared at the empty notebook in front of her. The pen in her hand felt heavy, almost like it was an anchor to the past, dragging her down whenever she tried to write. The room around her was quiet, save for the soft ticking of the clock on the wall, and for once, the stillness was comforting.

Her mind kept drifting to the conversation she'd had with her mother, the words hanging in the air like a distant memory. It had been hard, yes, but it had also opened something in Elise—something she wasn't sure she was ready to face. Her past wasn't something she could just erase. No amount of time could change the things that had happened.

But maybe, just maybe, she could stop letting those things control her.

Caleb sat across from her, his attention focused on the book in his hands. He noticed her staring at the empty page but didn't say anything. He knew Elise well enough to understand that sometimes, silence spoke louder than words.

"Elise," Caleb's voice broke through the quiet, soft yet firm. "You don't have to write right now. But I want you to know that whatever you're feeling, I'm here. You don't have to do this alone."

She looked up at him, meeting his steady gaze. There was something about Caleb's unwavering support that made her feel safe, like no matter what happened, he would be there to catch her.

"I know," Elise whispered, the words thick with emotion. "But I need to start somewhere. I can't keep pretending that everything is fine. I have to face this."

Caleb smiled, though it was tinged with sadness. "You don't have to be perfect, Elise. You don't have to have all the answers. All you need to do is take one step at a time."

Elise nodded, her gaze shifting back to the notebook. She took a deep breath and wrote the first few words that came to mind: "The past doesn't define me."

It was a simple sentence, but it felt like a small victory. For the first time, Elise felt like she was taking control of her narrative, instead of letting her past define her. The words weren't perfect, but they were real.

As she wrote, Caleb stood up and walked over to the window. The light outside had softened, casting a warm glow across the room. The rain had stopped, and the world seemed to be slowly waking up from the storm.

"You know," Caleb said, his voice distant as he gazed outside, "sometimes, it's the darkest moments that make us realize how strong we really are. We go through the worst of it, and then—just when we think we can't take any more—we find that there's a little light left. And that light? It's enough to keep going."

Elise paused in her writing, looking up at him. His words were like a balm to her bruised soul. She had been struggling to understand what it meant to heal, to move forward, to let go of the weight that had been hanging over her for so long. But maybe Caleb was right. Maybe it wasn't about fixing everything all at once. Maybe it was about finding the light in the darkness, even if it was just a small flicker.

"I want to believe that," Elise said softly, the words coming easier now. "I want to believe that I can find my way through all of this."

"You can," Caleb said, his voice firm. "You've already started."

For a moment, the two of them stood in silence, the weight of their words hanging in the air between them. It wasn't easy—healing never was. But Elise could feel the change within her, like a shift in the wind that promised something new. Something better.

"I don't know what the future holds," Elise said finally, her voice full of uncertainty. "But I know that I'm not the person I was. And that... that's enough for now."

Caleb nodded, stepping closer to her. He reached out and gently took the pen from her hand, placing it back on the desk. He didn't need to say anything else. His actions spoke volumes.

"You've already taken the first step, Elise," Caleb said quietly. "The rest of the journey will be just that—one step at a time. You're not alone."

Elise looked up at him, her heart swelling with gratitude. Maybe she didn't have all the answers. Maybe she wasn't completely healed. But she wasn't the same person she had been when she first walked through the door.

And with Caleb by her side, she was ready to face whatever came next.
