Chapter 1| 1st Discretion.
Orea wasn't the type to flaunt she wasn't the type to give a fuck or let others know what she had, she knew the dangers surrounding what she had, so the only thing she could do was hide her powers under a veil of nonchalance, and that was her first discretion.
" What do you think I should wear? This or that?" Her best friend asked, twirling around in a pink sundress, while she held a burgundy halter neck dress to her side, Orea shrugged, and her friend groaned, " I knew you were no help," she muttered, twirling once again to look at her frame in the mirror, orange-red hair combed back in a ponytail, lips painted pink, her cheek covered with a light blush.
Orea rolled her eyes, " fucking Barbie, you look like one of those doe eyes blondes who turns out to be the biggest snake, " this earned a snicker from her friend, her hand combed back her hair, still looking at herself in the mirror, more like looking at her doe eyes.
" Well, tell me, Orea, aren't I one of them, except without the blonde hair, of course," her friend questioned, her brow raised. Orange shrugged; it was true; her friend was a big snake, a snake who knew not to cross her limit with Orea, though.
" Well... The sundress looks better; at least it makes you seem more... innocent, which you aren't, " her friend laughed, batting her thick lashes, which were real, one of the things Orea wished she had, " stop that, Ana," she scolded.
" Well, making you jealous is what I was made for," Liliana or Ana as Orea liked to call her smirk, "It's no one's fault you are not as beautiful as me," and there go the words, had Orea cared for those things, then she had been an insecure piece of shit with the many times she had been told down by Ana.
" Says the one with the damaged hair," Orea fired back, earning a pout from Ana, and a bitter smile. Orea didn't apologize; she wasn't up for it. The insecure of the two was Ana, and she loved to put others down for it; the atmosphere in the room dropped. Ana did all she had to and then made her way out of the house. Upset.
Orea didn't feel an ounce of regret; Ana had talked her beauty down countless times. She picked up the scattered clothes, cleaned the room, and headed to her room to shower and comb down her thick 4c hair; while she did, she caught a whiff of a shadow on her wall; this made her sigh. Orea turned back to the wall where a shadow loomed.
It wasn't like anything she had seen, this one was thick, a completely dark shadow floating around her wall, it had claws, and dark obsidian eyes, and even though it was darkness itself, she could make out the smirk on its lips and the way he looked at her, she shivered, turned back to her mirror and continued combing her hair.
As soon as she could, Orea was out of the house, she passed by many of the townsfolk, greeting and chatting with them, all while ignoring the shadow that crept after her, its smirk not leaving its lips, finally, after a few minutes of walking, she arrived at her destination, the biggest most famous bakery and cafe in town.
"Morning Carol," she greeted, dropping her bag by the counter, then making her way to the dressing room. Alea sweetness, that was what her workplace was called, and she loved every inch of her workplace
"Morning Ore, how was your night? Ana? How is Ana too?" Carol replied, placing a mouthwatering cupcake in her mouth; Orea smiled; they mostly never had leftovers; it never happened before, " I saved it for myself," Carol explained, to which Orea chuckled.
" You didn't need to explain," Carol only shrugged; they both owned the shop, and it was Carol who brought the idea since Orea was a wonderful baker and Carol was good at making coffee, so they found Alea Sweetness together. " Besides, it doesn't matter if we have leftovers; I will just dump them and increase the price of the specials," she shrugged.
This earned her a laugh from Carol, " I wish I could be like you," she placed the last piece of the cupcake in her mouth; Orea, on the other hand, just shook her head.
"Trust me, you don't," and she meant it, because, as she looked beside her, the shadow was right there, its face so close to her that, had she not been used to it, she wouldn't have been able to bite back the scream bubbling In her throat, still, she shrieked a little and jumped back, the shadow laughed.
" Are you okay?" Orea couldn't reply; this was uncanny; the shadows had never moved so close to her; if anything, they hated her and scowled at her; this was a first; she grabbed the ring on her finger and closed her eyes, " Orea, are you..."
" I am fine," she countered, opening her eyes, then she smiled, " I am fine, now, get back to work, we don't have time to dwindle," her words weren't harsh, they only dripped of sarcasm, Carol flashed her worrying glance, yet she did as told.
Orea looked right into the shadows obsidians and smirked, which threw the shadow off guard; throughout the day, she made it a point to ignore the shadow; she would even return its smirk and roll her eyes at it at will; she had stopped giving a damn a long time ago.
Yet, at a dark corner of her head, she couldn't help but wonder what calamity would befall the town and how huge this one would be if only she could stop it. However, Orea knew better than to try. That was it, though; the calamity wasn't hers, and it wasn't any of her business.
Though, she did want to know why the shadow was different this time, was it something related to her? Was it something she didn't know? It couldn't be, even calamities related to her never go so close to her.
At some point, she shrugged, " it doesn't matter, it never does, it never did," she muttered, into the dead of the night, and that was it.
If only she knew how wrong she was.
