The Frost Arena buzzed with noise as Mia stepped onto the shiny, freshly-zambonied ice. The rink was her happy place, where everything else faded away, and all that mattered was her skating routine. She tugged at her gloves, ready to practice, when she noticed someone stomping onto the ice in full hockey gear. Ryan Cooper.

"Just great," Mia muttered, watching her breath puff into the cold air.

Ryan was the town’s hockey star, always acting like he owned the place. With his big shoulders and annoying smirk, Mia figured his ego could probably fill the entire rink.

“Hey, Princess Mia,” Ryan called out, his voice full of fake sweetness. “Still hogging the ice? Some of us have actual games to get ready for.”

Mia spun around and glared at him. “And some of us have championships to win. Just because you’re chasing a puck doesn’t make you special.”

Ryan skated closer, not as smooth as Mia but with a lot more force. “Dancing around in sequins doesn’t make you an athlete, either.”

Mia’s face turned red. “Oh, please. Hockey’s just punching people on skates.”

Their arguments were nothing new. Every time they were at the rink, they ended up fighting. She thought he was a loud, annoying brute. He thought she was a stuck-up perfectionist. Neither of them realized they weren’t so different after all.

That day, though, things got worse. Ryan’s team was warming up on one end, while Mia worked on her jumps on the other. She launched into a double axel just as Ryan took a wild slap shot. The puck zipped across the ice and slammed into the boards, barely missing her. Startled, Mia stumbled and fell hard onto the ice.

“Are you serious?!” she yelled, jumping up and skating toward him, her face bright red.

“Chill out, princess,” Ryan said, skating up to meet her. He shrugged like it was no big deal. “Not my fault you didn’t stick the landing.”

Mia clenched her fists, ready to yell back, but before she could, the rink manager’s voice echoed across the ice. “That’s enough! If you two don’t figure out how to share the rink, you’re both out of here.”

They both mumbled half-hearted apologies, glaring at each other as they skated back to their corners. But as much as they annoyed each other, there was a tiny flicker of curiosity buried under all that frustration.

Neither of them knew it yet, but their worlds were about to crash together in a way more dramatic than any jump or slap shot.
