The weatherman had forecasted storms today in the Pinewood area, and I really should've heeded their warning. My family farm was empty, It was just me and a cat, so i decided to drive into town to drink some coffee and maybe have a nice little bit of social interaction. Key word, it was just me and my cat.
I was about halfway home, sopping wet, and disappointed. They had gotten my order wrong at the shop, but I learned to ignore it, drink it, and be on my way. Then, about 3 miles from my house, I saw something that stopped me on a dime. A person hidden in a ditch on the side of the road. Without thinking twice, I pulled over and hopped out of my truck. That's when I saw who it was.
It was Kade Serrano, a local singer at a club across town. He would sing and dance and sometimes get frisky with the crowd, especially when he was drunk. I will admit, I didn't like him for a while. But that didn't matter. He was hurt, bad. Cuts and bruises lined his arms as if he was defending himself from someone, with a large gash in his forehead covered by his hair. I wanted to call 911, but my farm was right up the street, and the closest hospital was 30 miles away.
I piled him into the backseat, and he started murmuring random nonsense. I drove him to the house, fireman carrying him into the house. Within 2 hours, I had stitched his forehead gash and performed a transfusion on him with blood packs I normally keep for first aid in case of a hunting accident.
My cat seemed very annoyed by this sudden intrusion, but I didn't care. I wanted to help him, no matter how promiscuous his reputation was. After I stabilized him, I covered him up in a warm blanket and sat on the couch to read and pet my cat, Salem, and wait for him to wake up.
About two hours, I heard a sudden gasp as Kade woke up, breathing heavily. He looked me dead in the eyes and asked
"Mr. Gerlan, what happened?"
I looked at him, feeling pity for the celebrity.
"You, uh, might want to get comfortable for this..."
