The village festival was in full swing, with laughter, music, and the scent of sizzling jeon filling the air. Lanterns cast a warm glow over the scene, and the mood was infectious—joyful, carefree, and alive. While Min Hwan and Kyung Won danced among the villagers, two figures stood near the edge of the crowd, their mischievous grins betraying the secret they shared.
"You know, you're lucky you came all the way from Seoul to see me," Jung Won teased, his eyes sparkling under the lantern lights as he leaned casually against a tree. "Otherwise, I might've thought you were just here for work."
Jong Seong chuckled, raising an eyebrow. "What gave me away? My irresistible charm?"
Jung Won rolled his eyes but couldn't suppress his grin. "Please, we both know it wasn't just your 'charm' that brought you back. You missed me."
Jong Seong's playful smirk softened slightly, his gaze lingering on Jung Won. "Maybe I did," he admitted, his voice lower, more sincere.
Before the moment could get too serious, Jung Won, never one to miss an opportunity for humor, straightened up and fixed Jong Seong with a mock-serious look. "You know, since you're already here... why don't we just make it official and date?"
Jong Seong's eyes widened for a split second before he broke into laughter. "Are you asking me out right here? At the village festival?"
Jung Won shrugged nonchalantly. "Why not? I'm a catch, and besides, you've been flirting with me all week." He leaned in closer, his tone playful. "Might as well make it worth your while, don't you think?"
Jong Seong shook his head, smiling. "You never stop, do you?"
"Only if you say yes," Jung Won quipped, flashing a cheeky grin.
Jong Seong laughed again, shaking his head in amused disbelief. "Fine. Yes, I'll go out with you. Happy?"
Jung Won crossed his arms, pretending to consider. "Hmm, I don't know. I think I need a more enthusiastic yes."
Jong Seong rolled his eyes but leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Yes, I'll date you. How's that?"
"That's better," Jung Won grinned, clearly pleased with himself. "Now let's ditch this festival and have some real fun."
As they slipped away from the bustling square, their footsteps light and carefree, they wandered through the quiet village streets. The moon hung low in the sky, its soft glow casting long shadows on the cobblestone paths. The cool night breeze carried the distant sound of waves crashing against the shore, adding a sense of peace to the night.
"This place really is something else," Jong Seong mused, his eyes taking in the quaint village around them. "So different from Seoul. It's like time moves slower here."
Jung Won nodded, his hands casually tucked into his pockets. "Yeah, it's a different world. I've had my fair share of adventures working here at the clinic."
Jong Seong chuckled. "Oh? Do tell."
Jung Won's eyes lit up with amusement as he recounted one of his more embarrassing moments. "Okay, so get this—there was this one time when I accidentally walked into the wrong examination room while Min Hwan was treating a patient. And guess what? The patient was getting a full-body check-up." He covered his face in mock horror. "It was mortifying."
Jong Seong laughed, his shoulders shaking with amusement. "You? Embarrassed? I find that hard to believe."
"Oh, trust me, I wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out," Jung Won admitted, grinning despite himself. "But Min Hwan just gave me that 'you're impossible' look he does, and the patient laughed it off. Still, I'm pretty sure they never came back."
Jong Seong shook his head, still smiling. "Sounds like you keep things interesting around here."
"You have no idea," Jung Won replied, his tone cheeky.
As they continued their walk, Jong Seong began to share stories from his life in Seoul—the late nights at work, the constant pressure, and the way the city never seemed to sleep.
"It sounds exhausting," Jung Won said, giving him a sideways glance.
"It is," Jong Seong admitted, his usual playful tone softening. "Honestly, sometimes I wonder why I stay there. It's like I'm always running, but I don't know where to." He paused, the vulnerability in his voice clear. "Coming back here... it feels like I can finally breathe."
Jung Won looked at him, his expression uncharacteristically serious. "You should come back more often, then. Or stay. There's more to life than just work. You deserve better than that grind."
Jong Seong's gaze met Jung Won's, and for a moment, the banter that had filled the air between them faded, replaced by something deeper.
"You make it sound so easy," Jong Seong said, his voice quieter now. "But I don't know if I'd even know how to slow down."
Jung Won's expression softened, and he nudged Jong Seong lightly with his shoulder. "I could help you with that, you know. Dating me might just be the fresh start you need."
Jong Seong laughed, the tension between them easing. "Is that your way of saying I'm a workaholic?"
"Hey, if the shoe fits," Jung Won teased, grinning. "But seriously. You don't have to do everything all at once. Breathe."
For a moment, Jong Seong didn't respond, his eyes searching Jung Won's face. Then, with a small smile, he nodded. "Maybe you're right."
They eventually found themselves on the beach, the moonlight reflecting off the gentle waves that lapped at the shore. The sound of the ocean was soothing, a constant rhythm that seemed to calm the air around them.
As they walked along the sand, their conversation turned lighter again, filled with teasing remarks and shared laughs. They talked about everything from the quirks of the village to the undeniable chemistry they'd noticed between Kyung Won and Min Hwan.
"Those two are hopeless," Jung Won said with a grin. "It's like watching a slow-burn romance unfold in real time. They just need to admit it already."
Jong Seong chuckled, shaking his head. "You're one to talk. What about us?"
Jung Won looked at him, his eyebrows raised in mock surprise. "What about us? Do we have chemistry?"
Jong Seong's eyes gleamed with amusement as he leaned in slightly. "Maybe."
Jung Won feigned indignation, placing a hand dramatically over his chest. "Maybe? You're not sure?"
Jong Seong smirked, his voice playful as he responded. "I'll be sure once we kiss."
Without missing a beat, Jung Won took a step closer, closing the distance between them. He leaned in, his breath warm against Jong Seong's skin, and without a second thought, he kissed him—soft, quick, and lighthearted, their lips barely brushing before they both pulled back, laughing.
"So? Satisfied?" Jung Won asked, grinning up at Jong Seong, his eyes sparkling under the moonlight.
Jong Seong grinned back, his gaze lingering on Jung Won for a moment longer than necessary. "Yeah. I think we've got chemistry."
They stood there, side by side, the sound of the ocean in the background and the stars scattered across the night sky above them. For the first time in a long while, Jong Seong felt at peace, as if all the noise and chaos of his life in Seoul had finally quieted down.
And with Jung Won standing beside him, laughter still echoing between them, Jong Seong knew that this was exactly where he was meant to be.
