The sun was high, the air warm with the promise of summer, when Kyle found himself lounging in the front yard of his house. He had been reflecting on the events of the past few days, wondering if things were finally starting to settle. After the excitement with Jerry, Kyle felt a little restless—he wasn't quite sure what to expect next.

As he stretched his legs and leaned back, the sound of a ball bouncing interrupted his thoughts. He looked over and saw a guy in his early twenties, playing catch with a dog in the backyard next door. Kyle raised his hand and waved, offering a casual greeting.

"Hey, I'm Kyle! Just moved in," he called out.

The guy looked up, a grin forming across his face. He was tall, with messy dark hair, wearing a plain T-shirt and shorts. He waved back enthusiastically. "Ellis! Nice to meet you, man!"

Kyle smiled, walking toward the fence between their yards. "Nice to meet you, too. Looks like you've got a good game going with your dog there."

Ellis chuckled, motioning to the ball. "Yeah, he's a bit of a handful, but he's fun. You play basketball?"

Kyle raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, I used to back in high school. You wanna shoot some hoops?"

Ellis grinned wide. "Hell yeah! Let's do it."

The two of them quickly set up a game in the street, their friendly competition becoming a comfortable exchange of energy. As they dribbled, passed, and shot, there was a lightness in the air, a connection that grew with every play. Kyle's athleticism came easily, and Ellis kept up, making impressive shots with natural ease. The sweat on their bodies glistened under the midday sun, both of them giving their best, and laughing when they missed.

"You're not bad," Ellis said, wiping the sweat from his brow as he stood panting. "You've got a good shot. I thought I was gonna have to step up my game, but you held your own."

Kyle grinned, catching his breath. "Thanks. You're not bad yourself."

They shared a moment of camaraderie as the game came to a close. Both of them were winded and laughing, their shirts sticking to their bodies from the exertion. They walked over to the porch steps, sitting down next to each other. As the conversation shifted from sports to more personal topics, the bond between them solidified.

"So, you just moved here?" Ellis asked, stretching his legs out in front of him.

Kyle nodded. "Yeah, my dad's military. We move around a lot. It's a bit of an adjustment each time, but it's cool. I get used to it. How about you?"

Ellis shrugged. "Same old, same old. Been here a while. Not much changes. It's just me and the dog, really. Life's easy." He gave a small laugh. "Not that I'm complaining. I've got the best backyard in the neighborhood."

Kyle chuckled, the casual confidence of Ellis drawing him in. "Must be nice. I'm still getting used to the idea of staying in one place. It's weird not having to move all the time."

Ellis nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah, I get that. It's nice though, to have a home that's just... yours. No packing up, no goodbyes. You get to plant some roots."

Kyle thought about it for a second. He had always been the new kid. Moving meant never really having a chance to stay long enough to build something permanent. "Yeah. I get that. I've never really stayed in one place long enough to call it home, but maybe that's something I'll learn here."

The two exchanged a knowing look, a quiet understanding between them. Ellis's laid-back nature was comforting, and it helped Kyle feel more at ease. They sat in a companionable silence for a few moments, enjoying the break from their basketball game.
