life wasn't easy. for anyone, not just including you. some people have it easier in different aspects..like, money, or having supporting parents!
for you? you had none of that. barely any money, and definitely the farthest thing from supportive parents.
sometimes on days like these you wondered if you hadn't ever been born at all, maybe things could be different? better, even? that wasn't a good thought and you knew that. yet, you couldn't get it out of your mind. it was troubling.
you had read in various novels that thoughts like that lead to troubling things - but what would you even do about having a mindset like this? tell your five year old siblings? you doubted it.
. . .
the birds chirped quietly from outside your window, the joyous laughs of your little siblings over powering it whilst you did chores.
you calmly folded the slightly small kimono, running the fabric through your fingers as you place it gently onto your futon.
folding clothes was a task you minded the least, finding it relaxing and not to hard to do compared to getting your siblings to bed and such.
your fingers ran over a somewhat familiar fabric and your heart sped up - it was your sisters haori.
the haori your parents hid - denying her existence as much as they could from you and your siblings. how it got there? you had no idea. did it make you the slightest bit unsettled? well, yes, maybe.
despite that - it was beautiful. like it had gotten prettier since the last times you saw it - as if the blue got brighter, the snowflake design sharper - or maybe you had bad eyesight. your parents did always decline the thought of glasses, maybe was it because you couldn't afford it? or because they didnt believe you? but, you knew deep down it was because they just didnt care.
you ran your rough fingers over the japanese characters 'DESTROY' on the back in white - you that that was cool. having such an intimidating character on your uniform - like a sign saying 'hey, dont mess with me, im a ninja'
a sudden thought entered your head - it was your sisters words.
'hey, maybe when you get older i can make you my tsuguko! i bet the others would love it, two sisters of the same name being frost breathers, cool, right?'
you simply furrowed your eyebrows. what was she thinking? no way you could ever become a demon slayer - even if you tried, or got trained under a former hashira, you'd be dead in an instant.
sighing, you gave up on that thought. it was stupid and foolish of you to dwell on it. you went back to folding the fabric gently, placing it ontop of your futon and giving it one last glance before going back to the task at hand.
"KAW, KAW, LETTER FOR KANROJI MITSURI!"
you pause your task abruptly once again, sighing in annoyance and turning your head the sound of a crows voice echoing through your house.
you hadnt heard the name kanorji mitsuri in what felt like years. your sister was her tsuguko, casuing kanroji to visit rather often, but after her death you barely heard from her again.
it was like taboo to mention her.
you paused - why would her crow be here? you weren't kanroji, and you weren't anyone special to write letters to.
pulling yourself off the floor, standing and walking into the quiet but yet very bright living room, the sun casting shadows on the hard floor of your house.
"hello?" you mumbled out, walking towards the front door and pausing when your eyes land on a small—female kasugai crow—promptly holding a letter in her beak, dropping it infront of your feet.
you watched as she flies away, slightly confused and not realising what happened until she was fully gone, not getting a chance to say 'hey, wrong person!' or something like that.
you lean down, grabbing the letter with a perplexed look, staring at it before closing the front door and walking back to your room.
you walk in, peeking through your window to see your siblings still laughing and playing outside. the sight made you smile.
you slowly sat down onto your futon with a 'plop!' sound, and look at the letter once again. it would be rude to open up a letter meant for kanroji, but you were so curious.
knowing this was 𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘭𝘺 wrong, you opened the letter and hesitantly read the insides of it.
you blinked. that was a somewhat passive aggressive letter to send to kanroji of all people, rude, almost. though, the name 'tokito' sounded familiar. had it been that your sister tried to make you become friends with him before? it sounded familiar.
. . .
"y/n!! whats for dinner?" your ten year old sister shouted, running inside hand in hand with your six year old younger brother.
you turn your head to them, smiling and kneeling to they're level.
"well, i might have to go to the store—"
"is mama and daddy here?" the youngest sibling asked, looking up at you with puppy dog eyes.
you blinked.
since they were so young, you never had gotten the opportunity to actually explain what your living system was, and how you all couldn't be near your parents.
but you also didn't want to tell them, in fear they might go to your neighbours and tell them and have you all in an orphanage.
"well, mommy and daddy are out working! they might not be back today, so what do you want for dinner that i can make?" you said, smiling and patting they're heads affectionately.
"uhm..onigiri! or udon!!" your sister said, grinning widely at you.
you sweatdrop at her cheery and positive attitude. they were both outside playing all day, how were they not tired-?
"i would have to go to the market." you said, sighing and standing up straight, looking down at them.
"hmm..okay!!" your sister said, giggling and grabbing the hand of your younger brother and pulling him down the hallway.
i guess you had to go to the store now..?
