It was finals week at college, and you were buried in textbooks, notes, and a laptop. Your desk in your dorm room was cluttered with empty coffee cups and half-eaten snacks. You’d barely left your room for days, trying to keep up with the never-ending list of assignments. Your brain was fried, and you couldn’t focus anymore.
That’s when you heard a knock on your door.
"Hey," Liam’s voice called through the wood. "Got a minute?"
You stood up and opened the door to find him standing in the hallway, holding two coffees in one hand and a bag of chips in the other.
"You’re the lifesaver I didn’t know I needed," you said, sighing in relief. He grinned, his warm eyes sparkling.
"I figured you might be up here pulling your hair out, so I brought reinforcements." He stepped inside and placed the coffee on your desk, offering you the bag of chips. "I’m trying to be your knight in shining armor, but I’m a little rusty."
You laughed and shook your head. "You’re already doing better than anyone else I know."
He sat down on the edge of your bed, glancing around your room. "You really have been working hard, huh?" His tone was softer, more concerned than teasing.
"Yeah, well, finals don’t do themselves." You sat back down at your desk, taking a sip of the coffee he’d brought. The warmth spread through you, and you felt a little more energized.
"You should take a break," Liam said, leaning back with a casual smile. "We could go for a walk, grab some food, or just do something that doesn’t involve memorizing facts for a few hours."
You sighed, glancing at your notes. "I really should keep studying, but… I can’t focus anymore."
"Exactly why you need a break," he said, nodding toward the door. "Come on, just an hour. Your brain’s gonna thank you later."
You hesitated for a moment, but the idea of getting away from your desk for a little while was tempting. Finally, you nodded. "Alright, fine. One hour. You’re right."
Liam’s grin widened, and he jumped up from the bed. "Let’s go, then!" He grabbed your hand lightly, pulling you out of the room.
You both walked out into the crisp evening air, the campus quiet with only a few other students lingering in the distance. Liam led you toward the student union, and as you walked, you couldn’t help but feel a little lighter. His presence always had that effect on you.
"So," Liam began as you reached the building, "how are you holding up with everything? You’ve been pretty quiet about it."
You smiled slightly, rubbing your temples. "It’s just… a lot. I feel like I’m drowning in work."
Liam stopped and turned toward you, his expression serious. "You’re not alone, okay? We all get overwhelmed, but you don’t have to go through it by yourself. I’m here, whenever you need me."
His words were comforting, and you felt a weight lift from your shoulders. You hadn’t realized how much you needed to hear that until now.
"Thanks, Liam," you said softly, looking up at him. "It means a lot."
"No problem," he replied with a smile, his eyes warm. "Now, let’s go get some food before you fall asleep at your desk."
You laughed, feeling more relaxed than you had in days. The night stretched out ahead of you, and for once, the pressure of finals felt a little more bearable.
