Summary: She secretly watches over you with her crows, keeping you safe...

Mother Miranda didn't know how long it had been since her cold heart had moved. She thought that she'd only ever care for her daughter Eva, and that she'd never look at anyone else.

She was the kind to use others, like pawns. She wouldn't bat an eye sacrificing the other humans, the village she ruled and even the other lords who ruled with her.

She never expected herself to fall for a simple villager, while trying to find more experiment candidates. Her cold heart faltered, and she couldn't bear to let herself kill you.

The first time she met you, it was while you were in the forest, trying to escape from lycans. You ran desperately back to the village, to Louisza's house. The horde of lycans chasing you were ruthless, as they grabbed onto your arm and tackled you onto the ground.

She sent her crows to distract the lycans, chasing them away by pecking them. As the crows were about to fly away, you stopped them. Poor you, despite being injured, you were still worried that the crows would be hurt.

As such, you took them back with you to the village. The others weren't very fond of them, since crows were an omen of bad luck. Even still, you kept them, fed them, and took care of them. Even during the apocalypse, you were still so kind...

A few days later, the crows vanished, having returned to Mother Miranda. She still kept a close eye on you, seeing you pace around the room, anxious for the crows, she simply scoffed. That night, she sent her crows back to you.

It became a daily routine, where the crows would disappear in the morning, before returning at night with a little trinket. Little flowers, jewellery and even some gold coins.

You never knew where the crows got these gifts from, and you certainly hoped they didn't steal them from someone... then again, in the apocalypse, who would care about a gold coin or two?

...

One night, you heard flapping sounds at your window. A crow outside pecked on the glass, waiting for you to let it in. You quickly opened the window, helping in warm up by wrapping it in a small blanket.

The crow this time was significantly larger, compared to the previous times. You shrugged it off, thinking they just somehow miraculously grew twice its size over night... Who'd pay attention to that in a world of survival anyways?

You set it on your lap, petting its feathers. The crow let out, well, pleased crow noises, and leaned into your touch.

"Hey, we're about to start our prayer, come on downstairs. We have an outsider with us too," Louisza knocks on the door. You set the crow down in the blankets before following her downstairs. You noticed three new people in the room: Elena, her dad and a stranger.

Mother Miranda, in her crow form, sneaked downstairs behind you. The villagers gathered in a circle, chanting their prayers for Mother Miranda. "Great ones, hear our voice, together as one in reverence," the villagers joined hands, closing their eyes as they chanted.

"We call on thee within the endless dark to deliver us into fate's hands. As the midnight moon rises on black wings, so we make our sacrifice and await the light at the end. In life and in death, we give glory, Mother Miranda," as they finished the prayer, the villagers glanced at one another, before resuming their previous activities.

You were just about to go back upstairs to check on the crow, when a commotion suddenly started. Screams sounded, as everyone grew panicked. Elena's dad had started attacking Louisza. He knocked down a lamp, causing a fire to start.

"Quick, we must leave!" The stranger guided both you and Elena to the garage. "Wait, the crow..." you glanced at the growing fire, and then back at the direction of your room. "Squawk!" The crow from before flew into your arms, and you held it carefully.

"Quick, let's go," Ethan had found the truck key, and used the truck to ram into the doorway. We proceeded up the stairs, and into the attic, where Elena's dad appeared again. "Elena, no! Don't do it," you shouted, as you extended your hand for her to take.

Elena's dad was transforming into a Lycan, and the fire was spreading quickly. Elena glanced at her dad, before looking back up. "You have to go without me, hurry!" You were frozen. The stranger beside you didn't seem to give up, as he extended his arm once more. "Don't give up on me, Elena!"

The ramp was collapsing. In a final attempt, Elena's dad gripped tightly onto your arm, forcing you down with him. "What...?" You were still processing the situation. Before you knew it, the crow in your arms was no longer just a crow.

"Mother Miranda...?" Elena choked out. She shoved Elena's dad off you, bringing you to safety as the ramp finally gave out and collapsed. She wrapped you safely in her feathers, and glanced at Ethan. "I'll be back for you, Winters," She then vanished into her feathers, with you in her arms.

...

An unknown amount of time had passed, and you had awoken from your unconscious state. Everything was still blurry, but from what you could see, you were in some dark room, lying on a bed.

"You're awake," A figure walks up to you, and you recognise her immediately. "Mother Miranda...?" You gasped, as the woman nodded. "What happened? Is Louisza's house..." you looked down as you collected your thoughts.

"It perished in the fire," she explained, staring at you with her cold gaze. "I saved you," she continued. You furrowed your brows, recalling the events of the fire. All the remaining survivors were now gone.

When you came to realisation, Mother Miranda was much closer to you, examining your features. You then recalled the crow from before. "You were.." you started, and she huffed. "That's right," she folded her arms over her chest.

"You see, you happen to have caught my eye. And now that you're here... I guess I don't have to keep it a secret now, do I? Little crow..." you backed away, staring at her as you gulped. She tilted her head slightly to the side. "What's wrong? Don't worry... I don't bite... unless you want me to?"
