XV. Enough shocks.
Tommy, Maude, Arthur, Polly, and Ada were the only members meeting together in the Garrison for a second meeting after the board meeting. The pub was packed with men and women, who all cheered when they saw Tommy. Both Tommy and Arthur took off their gloves to shake the hands of the men they passed.
"Mr. Shelby...thank you for what you did." one of the men spoke as he shook Tommy's hand.
"What did I do?" Tommy questioned as he raised his eyebrows at the man.
"He was going to evict us, that bastard Fellows. Now he's cut our rent in half." the man explained, finishing his sentence with a laugh.
"Good. Glad to hear it. Glad to hear it." Tommy replied as he nodded his head, patting the man on the shoulder before he continued walking through the pub with his family trailing behind him.
Another man approached Tommy, taking Tommy's hand in both his as he shook it. "How far can we go, Mr. Shelby, with this beautiful dream?" he questioned.
"All the way, brother. All the way." Tommy replied as he gave the man a quick shake of the hand before pulling away and continuing walking.
"Revolution, man!" The man cheered after Tommy and Arthur patted him on the arm.
Maude leaned against the bar beside Polly, watching as people continued to greet Arthur and Tommy. "It's like the zoo." She muttered softly as she eyed the many people crowding the Shelby brothers, and Polly hummed in agreement.
Another man approached Tommy. "This crash, Mr. Shelby. They're saying they're gonna cut my hours," he explained as he shook Tommy's hand.
"Yeah? Where do you work?" Tommy questioned the man.
"Greenhams Engineering," he replied.
"Greenham brothers. I know them. They're not gonna cut your hours." Tommy assured the man as he kept walking again.
"God bless you. God bless you both." The man said as he looked between Tommy and Arthur.
"Enjoy your drink," Arthur told the man as he nodded his head.
"Gentlemen and ladies," Tommy called out as he stepped onto the entertainment podium at the end of the room. " If you'll all move into the saloon bar, where you will all be served a free pint of stingo." He told everyone as he motioned to the room behind him and everyone cheered. "Any man who served in France gets a brandy chaser," he added and everyone cheered again. "And in spite of what you're reading in the newspapers, I want to hear singing and laughing. Fuck the stock market."
"Fuck the stock market!" Everyone chorused after Tommy.
"They backed the wrong horses, so fucking what, eh?" Tommy questioned, and there was a chorus of agreement as the people began moving into the saloon bar.
