Let the broth cool,
do not linger on the steam,
or chase the perfect bite.
The fresh bread is not yours
and neither are the tomatoes
plucked from some distant garden. What will you do with a bite of pie
that brings you to tears?
Do not trust the buttery crust,
nor the ripe strawberries,
the honeyed glaze.
Stay with the emptiness,
the hunger in the hands,
the waiting for nothing at all. There are better things to pursue
than the taste that lingers on the tongue,
the slow, warm drip of satisfaction
that makes you forget
the table is set for the next course.
