For four years, Rudro has been operating a rickshaw. He picked up a passenger one day who unnerved him. The passenger had a frightening appearance, and Rudro couldn't get rid of the suspicion that he was a criminal. Part of the reason Rudro was terrified and perplexed was the passenger's dark complexion. Rudro was aware of the frequent criminal activity in his neighbourhood and had heard remarks to the effect that such people were unworthy of respect or a decent existence.

Rudro took pleasure in not being racist, so despite his racing heart, he maintained his composure and didn't react visibly.

Rudro: "May I ask you something, sir?"
Passenger: "Do you speak English?"
Rudro: "Yes, sir. I completed my M.A., but I couldn’t find a job. That’s why I started driving a rickshaw."
Passenger: "It’s unfortunate. Our society doesn’t value education anymore."

They eventually arrived at the passenger's destination. Rudro was given an additional 100 taka by the passenger.

Rudro: "Why are you giving me extra, sir?"
Passenger: "Take it. You deserve it. You are an educated person."

Rudro opened a book he had stored in the rickshaw after the customer had departed. It said, "Learn English in 30 Days." He grinned as he considered the 1000 taka he had earned that day and the unexpected kindness.
