"How are we gonna get past Alice and Jasper?" Bella asked.
That was a good question. Their scent would be easy for the vampires to pick out if they tried to leave without them noticing. They needed to do something about it. (M/N) thought about a shower, but if he were to properly scrub down his entire body with soap then it would take too long. If they didn't head down soon, Alice would come back to check on them, for sure. There was no guarantee soap alone would be enough to mask their scent, anyway.
"Masking scent," (M/N) repeated, he looked at Bella and an idea came to mind. He snapped his fingers. "Deodorant."
"They'll still recognise it," Bella said. "They're used to the smell."
"Of yours, maybe." (M/N) pulled out a fresh can from his bag. He was now thanking himself for resupplying a few days ago. He still had his other can, but it was running low. "I haven't used this one yet, and it's different to the one I normally use. It should give us enough time to leave before they figure it out."
"We'd have to basically suffocate ourselves if we wanted it to be strong enough to work," Bella said disapprovingly.
(M/N) popped the cap. "Then that's exactly what we'll do."
He started spraying himself but made sure to get every part of his body from head to toe, only covering his eyes, nose and mouth. Bella was coughing by the time he finished. He handed the can to her. "Your turn. There should still be enough in there."
"This is so dumb," she said, but got to work anyway. She sprayed and sprayed all over her body until nothing was coming out of the can. "Is that good?"
"Probably. I can't smell anything else." (M/N) scrunched up his nose at the intensity of it. Bella went to cover her nose with her shirt, but realised her shirt smelled the same so it was pointless.
"Seriously, why would you buy that type?" Bella said as she pinched her nose with her fingers.
"What? It's citrus, it's not that bad," (M/N) defended. "It's just because we used all of it and now I feel like mustard gas would smell better."
"Whatever, let's just go."
They ran down the stairs and stopped just before the hotel lobby. Alice and Jasper were waiting in line to check out. (M/N) was grateful the lobby was busy right now. They ignored the disgusted looks nearby people gave them, clearly not fond of the smell.
(M/N) looked back at Bella and put a finger to his lips. He didn't dare speak, knowing full well the vampires would hear them no matter how quiet their voices were.
They silently moved against the back wall of the lobby, farthest away from the front desk. People moved back and forth so they tried to match that pace, not making any obvious movements that would catch Alice's already divided attention as Jasper tried to talk to her. They were still waiting to reach the front, but Alice's nose scrunched up at the new smell.
(M/N) and Bella slipped out the front doors before Alice looked around. They stayed out of sight and called a taxi, and gave the man the address for the ballet studio once they hopped in the back. He looked at them questioningly and not-so-discreetly lowered the front car windows. (M/N) lowered his as well, in hopes of lessening the smell. It was completely dark out now. He watched the buildings pass by. This was it, the end of the line.
(M/N) had never really given much thought to how he would die. It shouldn't have been something he had to worry about at the age of 17. Moving to Forks had completely changed their lives. He had never felt so alive, and yet here he was, on his way to dig his own grave. There was so much more he wanted to do. They had been shown an entirely new world of things that only seemed possible in the land of imaginations, and it felt so cruel to have it taken away from them as soon as they dipped their toes into it. (M/N) looked at Bella. He could tell she was thinking about Edward, wishing she could see him just one more time. He hoped she would. If he could convince James to spare her and Renee, then at least something good would come out of this. Maybe then Bella could continue to live this incredible life.
