It was a bright, sunny day in the city of Bushville, a bustling metropolis exclusively inhabited by prey animals. In a modest apartment building, a young bunny named Wendy sat by her second-story window, peering down at the lively streets below. Her eyes swept lazily over the crowd of mammals, her boredom evident in her gaze.

Her attention first landed on a male rabbit striding confidently down the street. His broad shoulders and sharp, upright ears gave him a strong appearance, but Wendy quickly dismissed him, unimpressed. Her focus shifted to a slender mouse whose glossy fur glimmered in the sunlight. Yet, his delicate frame didn’t hold her interest for long either. Finally, her gaze settled on a rotund, waddling rabbit. She wrinkled her nose in disgust and muttered to herself, “Absolutely not!” Abruptly, she hopped off her stool, abandoning her perch by the window.

With a heavy sigh, Wendy flopped onto her bed and hugged a well-loved fox plushie to her chest. “There’s no one in this city I like!” she declared, her voice tinged with exasperation. She squeezed the plush closer, her frustration palpable.

Nearby, her roommate Amy—a grey mouse with short hair and a playful pink stripe across her forehead—paused her gaming to perk up her ears. She turned to Wendy with a reassuring smile. “Aw, Wendy,” Amy said in an attempt to cheer her up. “Don’t give up! I’m sure there’s a perfect mate for you out there.”

Wendy groaned dramatically, clutching her plush tighter. “But none of these mammals are as interesting as the guys in the Alfa novels!” she complained.

Amy shuddered at the mention of wolves and rolled her eyes. “Honey, aren’t you scared to read those? Those books are all about wolves and their... well, their appetites.”

“They’re not scary!” Wendy shot back defensively. “The Alfa novels are about love and loyalty. Wolves protect their Luna! And the intimacy—” Her words trailed off into a dreamy sigh, her cheeks flushing with affection.

Amy stared at her, visibly unsettled. “Okay... but you do realize those ‘intimate’ wolves could, you know, eat you alive?” she replied with dry sarcasm.

“Ugh, you don’t understand anything about wolves!” Wendy huffed, sitting upright and glaring at Amy. “They’re gentle, honest, and way better than any boring buck!”

Amy smirked and returned to her game, tossing out, “If they’re so ‘gentle,’ why did the government build that massive wall to protect us from them in the first place?”

The remark struck a chord. Wendy’s defiance faltered, and her expression grew somber. “Because they had to,” she murmured, her gaze dropping to the fox plush cradled in her hands.

Her voice softened. “I just wish we didn’t have to live like this…” She looked toward the small collection of plush predators on her shelf—wolves, foxes, lynxes, and ferrets. One by one, she adjusted them, arranging them with care before placing the fox plushie among them. Wendy sat on the floor, staring at her toys with a longing that words could barely express.
