The sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows of the small church, casting colorful patterns across the floor. Ethan sat near the back, his Bible resting on his lap as he watched Grace lead a group of younger kids through a short devotional at the front of the sanctuary.
Her voice was calm and steady, her warm smile encouraging the children as they eagerly answered her questions. Ethan couldn't help but admire her - the way she seemed so at ease in this space, so confident in her faith.
But what struck him most wasn't just how much she inspired the kids - it was how much she inspired him.
When the devotional ended, Grace clapped her hands, signaling the kids to follow the youth leaders into the adjoining classroom for snacks and games. She lingered for a moment, her gaze sweeping the room until it landed on Ethan.
"Hey, you," she said as she walked over, her smile soft but teasing. "You've been quiet."
Ethan shrugged, his lips curving into a faint smile. "Just thinking."
"About what?" she asked, sliding into the pew beside him.
He hesitated, running his fingers along the edges of his Bible. "About us. About everything."
Grace tilted her head, her expression curious but patient.
"These last few weeks..." Ethan began, his voice quieter now. "Losing my mom, going through all of that - I don't think I would've made it without you. Without God."
Grace's smile softened, her hand resting lightly on his arm. "You've been through so much, Ethan. But you didn't just make it - you grew through it. You leaned on God when it mattered most."
Ethan nodded, her words settling over him like a warm blanket.
"I don't think I realized until now how much I needed this," he said, his voice firming. "Not just God, but people. You, the youth group, the church. I spent so long thinking I had to figure everything out on my own."
"You don't," Grace said softly. "And you never did."
Ethan turned to her, his gaze steady. "I know that now. And I'm ready to stop running from it. From all of it."
That evening, Ethan and Grace sat together at the park, the sun dipping lower over the horizon and painting the sky in shades of pink and gold. The air was cool, the faint rustling of leaves filling the comfortable silence between them.
"You've been talking a lot about moving forward," Grace said, glancing at him. "Do you know what that looks like yet?"
Ethan let out a slow breath, leaning back against the bench. "Not exactly," he admitted. "But I think it starts with me being more intentional. Not just about my faith, but about everything - how I live, how I love, how I give back."
Grace smiled, her fingers brushing against his where they rested on the bench. "I think you're already doing that."
Ethan looked at her, his chest tightening with a mix of gratitude and something deeper - something that had been growing quietly for months.
"Grace," he said, his voice low but certain. "You've changed my life in ways I can't even put into words. And I don't just mean because of your faith or how you've guided me. I mean you. You've shown me what it means to love, to forgive, to trust.
She let out a shaky laugh, her hand slipping into his. "Ethan, I-" She paused, smiling through her tears. "You have no idea how much that means to me. You've come so far, and I couldn't be prouder of you."
They sat there for a moment, the world around them fading as they held each other's gaze.
"I want us to keep growing, too," Grace said finally. "Together."
Ethan's lips curved into a smile, his heart full.
"Together," he echoed.
