How To Change An Ending
------
Step 1: Find your text that requires an ending change
Step 2: Figure out how you'd change it
Step 3: Change it.------
She is sitting on her couch, laptop in her lap while watching Netflix. Today's been long for Wendy, just like everyday. It's a struggle to get up in the morning, to go to school, to eat, to do anything.
Her doorbell rings. "Ugh, everyone ruins my Netflix time," she shoves her laptop on the coffee table and slowly walks to the door. Whoever you are, I'm going to kill you for interrupting me. Who does that to someone, why would you interrupt something as important as Netflix. Fix yourself please. She reaches the door and without looking trough the peephole, she yanks it open. "And who the hell are you?" She asks snappily. Scowl and everything included.
I blink, "You're not going to believe this, but I come from the real world and I've been given the chance to change an ending in my favourite book, this book. I know how your story ends and I'm here to change it."
She takes a step back, "The fuck? What are you on? This is the real world! I'm calling the cops."
I shake my head and sigh, I knew this would be hard to explain. I throw my hands in front of her face and plead, "Don't call the cops, just hear me out, please." I take out my phone and show her a picture of the book that we're currently in. "This is the story. Your story, the one we're currently in. The one where I change the ending." I put my phone away, watching her carefully, "I'm here to change your life, whether you like it or not. I'm not going anywhere until the story's changed and it would be a lot easier for the both of us if you went along with it. So I suggest you go along with it."
Wendy stands in her doorway staring at me, her eyes filled with confusion yet trying to figure everything out. Finally she nods, "I'll go along with it, but you've got more explaining to do." She turns her back towards the door and did something I should've seen coming. She kicks the door shut, on my face. You've got to be kidding me. Apparently Wendy isn't one of those people who does what they say they're going to do. I should've known.
I groan and kick the door, she did it so I get to do so too. I pound on the door a couple times, "Wendy! Seriously! You could've clipped my finger or something!"
There's shuffling behind the door when it finally reopens. Wendy states at me, with a gaze that could burn a hole in my skull. "How the fuck did you know my name?"
Oh well that explains things. I stand a little taller and lean against the foyer. "I told you, didn't I? I've read this book before, I'm here to change the ending and I know you."
She throws her hands up in frustration, "I'm assuming you're never gonna leave even if I don't let you in."
I nod and point at her, "I told you that too."
She shoots me an unamused glance, "Fine, I'll let you in but make one weird move and I'm calling the cops."
I give her a mock salute, "Yes ma'am."
"Your sarcasm is greatly unappreciated." She steps away from the door and gestures for me to come in.
I follow her back to her living room where Wendy sits on her couch and I sit across from her. "This is a little complicated to explain but I'll do my best. You're the main character in my favourite book and for a reason unknown to me, I've been given the chance to change the bring to this book. I'll be staying here until I do so and your parents think I'm their friends' sisters' niece. You'll be the only one who knows why I'm truly here."
Her hands wrap around her mug filled with tea, "Why would you change how my life ends?" Damn, this girl is crazy. Why'd I let her in again?
"I wasn't satisfied with how the book ended and I wanted to change it. How I actually got the chance to change it? That, I don't know. I get one chance and whatever I do, becomes forever written into the book."
"Can you tell me what happens tomorrow or later when my parents get home?" Or the answers to my exam in a couple days.
I shake my head, "From here on out I can't tell you anything about your future. It's going to end up changing, hopefully. You can continue doing what you do, it's like I won't even be here."
Her shoulders relax, "Alright. You know, you haven't even told me your name."
I laugh, "Sorry about that. I'm Natalie, but most people call me Nat."
Wendy smirks at me, "Well Nat, you're in for a challenge." And don't you think for one second I'm not watching you, one wrong move and you're gone.
