Hazel was the first to enter the house. She threw her things down onto the dust covered dining table and sat down. She sighed heavily as she put her head into her hands. She could hear Joel, Bill and Ellie talking in the living room, but she didn't care enough to listen in on what was being said. That moment was the first time she had been alone since Tess's death. The first time she had been given a moment to sit and think about it.
She had been avoiding thinking about Tess ever since it happened. She couldn't stop thinking about the way her little sister's body was just sprawled out on the floor, covered in blood and bullet holes. She couldn't even go back to retrieve her body and give her a burial, Tess had to be left there for the rest of time. Hazel made a promise to their parents when the outbreak happened that she would protect Tess no matter what. She had broken that promise. She had failed.
"I love you, Haze."
The last words Tess ever spoke to Hazel played on repeat in her mind. She saw Tess's face in her last moments every time she closed her eyes. She had barely been able to sleep. She was being haunted by her sister's face and no matter what she did, she couldn't make it stop.
Annie watched Hazel from a distance with a concerned frown. She missed Tess just as much as the others, but no where near as much as Hazel did. She walked over to Hazel and placed her hand on the older woman's shoulder. "Hazel?"
Hazel quickly wiped her eyes before she looked up at Hazel. "What?" She questioned, still blinking away the tears that remained.
"I just wanted to check in with you. I hate seeing you sad." Annie admitted.
"I'll be fine, Annie. I just needed a moment alone." Hazel replied. She stood up and gathered all of her things, before forcing a small smile in an attempt to convince Annie she was in fact okay; but Annie saw straight through it.
"You might be able to fool Dad and Ellie with that look, but you can't fool me." Annie said. She wrapped her arms around Hazel in a tight hug, and found the older woman hugging her back even tighter.
"Don't you bring Tess into this!"
"Oh, that can't be good." Annie mumbled. She let go of Hazel and the two of them following the sound of Joel's yells into the living room where he argued with Bill.
"--she can shove it right up--"
"She's got nothin' to do with--!" Joel stopped yelling midsentence as he realised Bill had become distracted by something else in the room. He looked over his shoulder and saw a decomposed body hanging from the ceiling. "Jesus." He muttered. "What? Do you know this guy or something?"
"Frank." Bill replied.
"Who the hell's Frank?" Joel asked.
"He was my partner. He's the only idiot that would wear a shirt like that." Bill replied as he stepped closer to Frank's body. He took out his machete and cut Frank's body down. "He's got bites. Here. And..."
