Mahito tilted his head slightly at Megumi's question, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. He hadn't expected that kind of inquiry, not from Megumi of all people, and certainly not about Nyx.
"Why doesn't Nyx talk much about her sister?" Megumi repeated, his eyes narrowing slightly as he glanced over at the woman in question.
Mahito blinked, momentarily puzzled. Nyx had never mentioned having a sister. Sure, she was one to keep her cards close to her chest, but that didn't seem like something she'd hide.
He caught Nyx's eyes as she let out a sigh, a slow exhale that spoke volumes, her usual composure slipping just a fraction.
"She's a pop singer," Nyx said with a half-hearted shrug, her voice a little more strained than usual. "Sweet girl, but she's just... unsettling."
Mahito raised an eyebrow at that, intrigued despite himself. Nyx didn't seem the type to get easily rattled. For someone who kept such a cool, almost impenetrable facade, the words that followed were almost... unsettling in their own right.
"I love her," Nyx continued, her voice quieter now, "but she's a freak."
The words were muttered almost under her breath, but there was something in them—something Mahito couldn't quite place. He watched her, studying the way her face shifted. It was subtle, but he could tell that the topic of her sister was far from simple. There was a depth to it, an unease that Nyx herself wasn't letting show too obviously.
"You think she's... a freak?" Megumi asked, his tone more curious than judgmental, but still, it was clear he wasn't expecting this side of Nyx. "What does that even mean?"
Nyx paused, and for a moment, Mahito could almost see her trying to piece together her words.
"She's just... too much, y'know?" Nyx's gaze flicked down for a second, her amber eyes softening. "She's this... perfect, shining thing, but underneath? It's like she's some kind of... I don't know... force. Like she's trying to pull everything around her apart. It's exhausting."
Mahito let out a low chuckle, the concept of a "freak" taking on a new, more intriguing flavor now. "Sounds like a perfect match for Team Black," he muttered under his breath, but Nyx didn't seem to hear him, her mind clearly elsewhere.
Megumi remained silent, though his eyes were now focused, sharp, as if trying to untangle the complexity of what Nyx was hinting at. Mahito felt a small thrill at the thought of unraveling whatever mystery lay between Nyx and this elusive sister of hers.
Mahito let the silence hang for a beat, savoring the way Nyx's words almost stung, like a well-placed jab he hadn't expected. He tilted his head, the corners of his mouth twitching into a grin.
"Her name, Nyx. You know I'm not the type to let things go."
Nyx shot him a look then—a sharp, narrowing of her eyes that briefly flickered with something like warning. But it was quickly replaced by an uneasy, almost nervous smile.
"No," she said, her tone light, but there was a weight behind it. "I'm not giving you her name." She shrugged, almost sheepishly, as if preparing to deliver a punchline. "No offense, but she'd take one look at you or your Instagram and roll over like a dog in heat."
Mahito blinked, letting the image settle into his mind. He couldn't help but laugh under his breath, imagining Nyx's sister—this pop-singer, unsettling thing—reacting to him the way Nyx described. There was something poetic about it, in a way.
But Nyx wasn't done. Her expression tightened slightly, as though the next words carried something far more personal.
"And I don't need her first experience with a man to be with you," she added, her voice a little softer now but no less firm. "Or anyone else from this damn gym."
The words hit harder than Mahito expected. He wasn't one for second-guessing himself, and yet, something about the way she said it made him pause, if only for a moment. Nyx was protective, yes, but this wasn't just protective—it was almost territorial, in a way he couldn't quite place. He couldn't remember the last time someone had been so direct with him, especially about something that wasn't even his business.
He tilted his head again, his grin widening just a fraction. "You think I'm that bad, huh?"
"Not think," Nyx shot back with a playful smirk. "I *know*."
Mahito chuckled, his gaze slipping over to Megumi, who had been oddly quiet during the exchange. He couldn't quite tell if Megumi was amused or just processing. Either way, it didn't really matter. Nyx's unflinching defense of her sister? That was the real thing to pay attention to.
"Alright, alright," Mahito said, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "I won't press you for her name. For now."
But the thought of this "freaky" pop singer—Nyx's little sister, wrapped in her own mysteries—lingered in the back of his mind. He liked the idea of things being off-limits. Unreachable. It made the chase that much more interesting.
"And hey," he added with a grin, "if she's as much of a freak as you say, I might just end up liking her even more."
